DK Readers L2: Pocahontas (DK Readers Level 2)

Got for my 7 and 4 year old. Story is very G-rated. Good facts and good story about what really happened with a painting of the real Pocahontas.

My second grader was doing a research paper on Pocahontas. This was the perfect reading level for her. I did quite a bit of research on Pocahontas and this book reflects the actual history of her story, which is very interesting (much more interesting than the Disney movie). The illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommended!

I like introducing children to history. There are so many great people and Pocahontas is one of them.In this book, the story of Pocahontas comes to life. This book talks about her history from when the settlers first arrived, until her death in England.From a time line perspective, this book is very nice. It captures the essence of her life with every page talking about a different turning point.The one issue I had is with the overall sentence structure. I know this is a beginner reader, but I found this book to be very choppy. The sentences were short. I think every page could have used a few additional descriptive words or something.Overall this is a nice book. A fun addition to a library.

It was a good book because it was a true story.

After reading The True Story of Pocahontas: The Other Side of History, written by Custalow and Daniel, which shares the Mattaponi tribe’s version of the story, passed down orally through the generations, I was anxious to find a children’s primary-level book for my child on Pocahontas that respected her tribe’s perspective. I examined all six that my local library has. Pocahontas, by Caryn Jenner, is one that was far too skewed toward the colonialists’ perspective for my comfort.
