A must read for military historians
This is not a recent book and I should have read it many years ago. The research into this dreadful period in our history is quite substantial and very detailed. Nevertheless the narrative flows easily and it is a pleasure to read. Highly recommended for those who are prepared to understand the circumstances that led to this betrayal.

A stunning story of betrayal and appeasement by western democracies ...
A stunning story of betrayal and appeasement by western democracies and a lesson that should never be forgotten. Micolai Tolstoy's analisis of Western and Sovjet dicisionmaking is blilliant. Often foreign offices of Western countries are favoring appeasement today as well. There is only one unanswered question, is there a link with Stalins decision to throw Subhas Chandra Bose in the Gulag?

thank you
Well received, excellent condition and rapid delivery. The book is a very interesting study of the question equally discussed in The Minister and the Massacres by the same author.

A betrayal of over 2.3 million Russians that NO ONE has ever heard about! Thanks Tolstoy!
Amazing to find this book and learn about the betrayal of Brittan & the USA of over a Million Russian POW's (and another 1.3 million Russian civilians) who were repatriated against their will at the end of WWII, by our Military (brit & USA). Shameful. Also I was shocked to learn the truth that over a MILLION Russian soldiers went over to the Germans side in hopes that the germans could get rid of the Bolsheviks (Commie) government in Russia. (lst time in history that soldiers in large numbers defected to the other side to escape their own horrible regime.) SEemed like a very long book..about halfway through it slowed down, only to pick up shorthly thereafter again. Tolstoy goes through most countries in Europe and researched how their Russian 'POWs' were treated /returned at the end of the war. What shocked me is how secretive the Brits were because they KNEW they were violating the Geneva Convention by sending these Russians (who mostly had NEVER fought against the Brits and Americans and in some cases killed their own German commanders when they could to help the 'Allies' minus Russia! I was blown away that I knew almost nothing about this shameful behavior after the war. Suicides abound...these Russians knew what awaited them in Russia and they did NOT want to breathe their last breaths in the terror camps of the Gulag or KGB/CHECKA. Shameful history the Brits tried hard to hide. Anyone who flirts with Communism should look at this book and if they are not revulsed, something is wrong!

Horrifying
Horrifying and sad book about the fate of so many Russian POW's, refugees and anti-Bolsheviks that were handed over to the Soviet Union by the Western Allies after World War 2. Stalin and his cronies were just as evil as Hitler and his followers, and this book is just another example of how the Western Allies had to make a deal with the devil to defeat another evil. Especially sad is the fate of the Cossacks, where they were almost exterminated by the Soviets and few survived the Gulags, and how the Soviets settled personal scores with the émigré White Russians who opposed them during the Russian Civil War. This is a must read for the youth of today to see what happens when communism takes over a nation.

An excelent study of a long-silenced shameful episode
I bought the previous edition back in 1983 and lost it. Extremely glad it has been reissued end even happier about the building of the monument to the Victims of Yalta. The book shows how shameless politicos may be. Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler amounts to fierce resistance when compared to Churchill's and Eden's submissiveness to Stalin. In my opinion Churchill (as proven by his stint as Primer Minister in the early 50s) didn't want no recognize that Britain was no longer the Supreme Power, while Chamberlain realized that.

Must learn history if you want to understand the world today
During the Second World War, FDR and Churchill made a deal with Stalin. In addition to leading to the Iron Curtain, the Warsaw Pact, and strengthening the hands of Soviets dictators to come, the deal involved sacrificing a number of people who had fled to the West. Tolstoy has been exposing the complicity of the West in this betrayal. Well worth a refresher if you have already read it. Well worth opening your eyes if you haven't.

Very informative and well written about little known horrors imposed by Stalin on his own people.
