My Chip Carving Platinum Edition Knives (Stab Knife)

I was disappointed with the fit and finish on the knives. The handle scales were not even with the knife tangs and the scales were very roughly sanded. I used some fine sandpaper to clean up the rough and sharp edges on the tangs and handles and then gave the knife blades a good sharpening. The knives work fine now that I have given them a good tune up. However, for the price, the knives should have arrived in better condition.

I purchased this set of knives after using a cheap flex-cut knife. That was a well over a year ago. I can't say enough good things about this set of knives, all the way down to the box.I've now had this set a little over a year I believe, and I use two of the three daily. The punch knife isn't used all the time, but honestly I never expected these to hold up as well as they have.I carve about 3 hours per day now, every day. I use chip carving as a way to relax and get my eyeballs off the monitor. I expected as much I planned on using them i'd be replacing them frequently, which honestly I wouldn't mind at the price. But it turns out they are as good as new now. The combination of stainless steel and carbon in the blades is perfect. they take a fantastic edge and keep it.To give you an idea how well they last, I have not sharpened them for over a year. I wish i knew then what I know now and I'd never have sharpened them then. I have found that all you need to do is strop the blades frequently (about every 20 minutes while carving) and they will stay perfect for a very long time.I also found that the rosewood handles have not dried out, or even faded much. The knife I use the most is just a tad darker than the others but it's barely noticeable. I'm failry sure there are several years of use left in them. In fact, Based on the fact that the edge is as good now as it was when I got them, i might not need a new one for ten years.The modified knife has actually taken the place of my main chip carving knife. The blade being narrow (not sure how else to say that) means you can make extremely tight curves without blowing out your cut.I wish there was more to say about this, I've bought several knives between whittling and chip carving, and there isn't a knife in my box that I use more. I don't even use the normal roughing knife i have anymore, I use the main chip carving knife.If I had to pick one thing I like the best it would be the comfort. they fit perfectly in your hand and also promote correctly holding the knife. Beyond that, the notch for the thumb is perfect. it sets your fingers up so you have a perfect tripod and your hands don't get tired.I highly recommend these knives and am confident you'll be as pleased as I am.

I purchased this knife to make a chip carved 50th anniversary plate for a couple I know. I had tried to do the carving with the regular knife, but the curves where very hard to get smooth and sharp curves where impossible for me. I talked to Marty and he suggested this knife. When I looked at it on line, and when it came it didn't look much different from the regular knife, but it makes a big difference. I can now make curves, even fairly tight ones and although they aren't perfect they are acceptable to me. I would highly recommend this knife if you are doing any curves or lettering. Also would recommend the scalloped plate, makes a very attractive carving.
