The Autism Acceptance Book: Being a Friend to Someone with Autism
L**M
Engaging materials for ~ ages 7-13 to learn about Autism and experience what it might be like to live with it.
I purchased this book for my 12-year-old son who continues to struggle with some of his older brother's, who lives with Autism, behaviors, black and white thinking and other attributes, often continuing to take them personally. Of course, this is a life long process for all of us and changes some as things change, but this issue creates a great deal of negativity in our home, despite various types of help along the way. I've been looking for a book that would not overwhelm him, be age appropriate and engaging. The variety of teaching approaches , excercises, and other tools create an engaging and fun experience for children and adolescents to learn more about the various attributes of individuals on the Autism may live with and excercises to help the reader experience what it might be like to live spectrum;the way they see the world, why they may speak differently, engage in certain behaviors or appear unfriendly. The Author also helps others to understand that people who live with Autism are not all the same. The information and tools in the Autism Acceptance book have helped us create a significantly more calm and peaceful enviornment in our home. The few people who spend a fair amount of visiting in our home, have asked me about 1-2 hours into the visit, "Where are the boys? What is going on? It's so quiet! I hope you find it as fresh and egaging as our family has.

Best Group Lesson Plan
I recently took this book to my son's third grade classroom and spent an hour just talking with the kids about Autism. With this book as a guide, it was easy to clearly explain the symptoms of autism. The suggested portions of "walking in their shoes" provided a simple way for the kids to begin to understand what it might be like to have ASD.The book provoked wonderful questions from the kids and referencing the book I was able to give understandable answers.Even though we live with autism, it helped my third grader to better understand his brother. It is well written, well layed out and simple to follow. I'll be taking it to my daughter's pre-k classroom soon. It shows children that differences aren't scarry. They are just different.I highly recommend this book.

UNDERSTANDING MOM
I am buying children's books on autism so that my [...] son can read them. I want him to learn as much about autism as he can. He does not have autism but I do. "the Autism Acceptance Book" explains how this condition affects the way some people, with autism, brains work. I want him to learn how I think and why I act somewhat differently from other mothers. This book can explain in a younger version of how autism works. There are many children out there that have autism and my son I know has met a few of these kids but he probably doesn't know that they have autism all he knows is that they are different. This book and others like it will help children that don't have autism to better understand those who do have autism. My son has a mom and a friend with autism and that person is me.

Thank you Ellen Sabin, for this excellent book!
This is the perfect book to teach children about autism. It's speaks to them at their level of understanding. It also speaks about understanding peoples differences and being accepting. I use this book to talk to 2nd and 3rd grade classes at my sons elementary school. I have purchased a few copy's and donated them to our school. Thank you Ellen Sabin, for writing this helpful book!

Great book. Great condition
Great book. Great condition. It has a total of 61 pages full of autism awareness education but most of all of promoting acceptance. It also has activity to promote empathy (walking in the shoes of a person with autism). Every school should have this book.

A great help
Although yet again this is a book based on the American terminology I hasten to add it is not enough to stop this being a great little book. The ideas and the actual trying to explain autism to children certainly is well thought out and had proved informative . I have decided to let my child's teacher borrow this to use in class discussions as she sees fit. It is a book that all ages who know little of autism and it's effects will find helpful a must for all bookshelves and library's

Useful book
A very well written introduction for classmates of children with autism. Clearly written and illustrated with just enough information for young children to understand.
