I've never tried dipping mine in water, but I do wash them off with a damp cloth as needed, and it has never harmed them. It seems like they should be waterproof anyway, since they're shells. I think it also might depend on what you do with them, and whether your entire "project" is waterproof. And for the colored versions, I definitely wouldn't trust the color being waterproof.
