Big Little Lies Season 1 (DVD, 2017, 3-Disc Set)

Every character in this show has problems, yet they are trying so hard to be better. The story follows a group of four woman and their kindergarten-age children. One woman seems to have the perfect life with her adoring husband and twin sons, and she hasn't dared to tell anyone anything different. One is always up in everyone's business, and though she is loud and bossy she truly cares about others. One is a single mom with a secret who is horrified when her son is accused of hurting a girl in his class, and the other is the mom of the hurt girl, a bulldog business woman who feels blamed for success. The story follows a unique format: it's a mystery told backwards, starting with the night when someone dies at a school function, and without saying who or how until the end, it shows pieces of interviews with everyone present along with the events of the weeks preceding the function. It is a smart show which is very well acted, shot, and edited. I'm not sure about a second season as I think it ended just right. I've already seen it through twice.

Geez....I recommend this little gem to everyone (um, over the age of 18 please). Every single actor in this was crazy exceptional, but I now understand why Kidman and Skarsgard won the Emmy and why they were nominated in the first place. Their particular story running through the episodes was incredible. Astonishing even.These were exceptional performances to the point you felt like you were looking into real lives.Good grief, such excellence in film.Congrats on the limited series for their Emmy win for BEST limited series. Only seven episodes and what powerful ones too.I normally don't like watching slow drama unfold, but this was scary good.Bravo.

Lianne Moriarty’s book Big Little Lies has been turned into a seven-episode limited series that premieres on HBO this Sunday, February 19th. It was adapted for the screen by David E. Kelley, who is probably best known as the creator of Ally McBeal. (You can read my review of the book here.) I was lucky enough to be invited to an advance screening of the first episode which was very exciting because I LOVED the book.Big Little Lies opens with a murder. Not only don’t we know whodunit, we don’t know even know who was murdered – or why. First we have to get to know the moms of the first graders at a swanky public school in Monterey. (Yes, the setting has been moved from Australia to California but that didn’t really make a difference.) Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), mom to Chloe is a gregarious, bubbly woman who is also mom to sullen teen Abigail. Celeste (Nicole Kidman), mom to twins Max and Josh, is married to Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), a younger man who seems like the perfect father. She’s best friends with Madeline. Renata is a working mom seems to think she’s better than everyone else. Jane (Shaliene Woodley) is a young single mom to Ziggy and new to the area, making her an outsider.Madeline quickly takes Jane under her wing. When Ziggy is accused of bullying Renata’s daughter Amabella, all of the moms at the school quickly choose up sides, leaving Madeline and Celeste the only ones in Jane’s corner.Just like the book, snippets of police interviews with supporting characters about the murder are interspersed throughout the episode. They are darkly humorous and quite entertaining. I was hoping that they would keep them in because they were one of my favorite parts of the book.The casting in this movie is spot-on. Reese Witherspoon is perfect as Madeline. She’s what I imagine her character in Legally Blonde would be like after she grew up and had children. In the book, Celeste is supposed to be almost otherworldly beautiful and Nicole Kidman certainly fits the bill as far as that goes. As the series goes on, her superior acting skills will definitely be utilized. I was a little concerned when I heard Shaliene Woodley was cast as Jane because I had only seen her play teenagers up to that point. I didn’t know if she would have the maturity to play a young mother. I needn’t have worried – she is up to the task, portraying Jane as a single mom with a mysterious past who loves her son with fierce emotion. And Alexander Skarsgård is as hot as ever. He could stand in the corner playing a potted plant for all I care, as long as I got to look at him.I’m quite happy with how the first episode followed the book. I didn’t know if HBO would be able to get seven episodes out of one book. At the same time, the layered intricacies essential to building the inherent suspense of Big Little Lies would be difficult to condense into a two-hour movie. After viewing the pacing of the first episode, I don’t think there will be any problem stretching the story over seven episodes. The extra time will allow the characters to fully develop as they were in the book and make the suspense that much more tantalizing.Even after watching just one episode, I’m confident that the HBO version of Big Little Lies will be at least as good as the book, maybe even better!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this series! I am really enjoying Reese Witherspoon as an actress in a series more than in a movie, always liked her but this seems to be more her thing.Truly enjoy the way it is portrayed with current, past and future shots- keeps you on the edge of your seat and engaged.

When I first saw the trailer for this show, I wasn’t so interested. But I’m so damn glad that I changed my mind. To me, this was a story of how women can be petty and stress about the little things in life (i.e.birthday parties and petitions), but when they use their power to lift each other up, they’re capable of greatness. Everything from the acting and music to the cinematography was top notch and stunning. I finished the series in two nights and now I need a minute to catch my breath. Can’t remember the last time I was this moved by a story. The ending was perfectly executed.

Why is this so much fun? I wondered as I obsessively watched every episode... twice. Seriously, this is just so "twisted," as Nicole Kidman's character describes her marriage. "But kinda great," as Reese Witherspoon's character replies. The story unfolds in a tangled web of beautiful people, domestic violence, adorable kids, guns, Monterey sunsets, rape, friendship, bullying, and a cool California coffee shop where the chat is about whether one of the moms is packing -- and not lunches. But is she the murderer? I've only seen the first six episodes so I'll have to wait for the finale, but I already rate this series an A+++ . From the actors (all of them) to way the camera catches both the stunning beauty and the moody unpredictability and wildness of the Pacific Ocean, it's riveting television. A fabulous guilty pleasure with enough redeeming social commentary that I can pretend that's why I won't answer the phone when I'm in the middle of an episode. But seriously? It's wicked good.

Guess who watched the whole set in one go?! The story is mesmerising; the performances faultless.....& even at the (comparatively) happy ending we're left with a conundrum -- who is the 'watcher' with the Zippo lighter?And why?The dangerous chemistry (think lighting a cigarette in a filling station!) between Kidman & Skarsgard is riveting -- there's no build-up, from the first moment you sense the icy chill between them, the switches from victim to abuser & back; Skarsgard is unbelievable -- conveying menace without a word spoken....& the heart rending scenes where Kidman, so desperate for help, yet still wishing to protect those she loves, tries to bluff her therapist.....All the characters, including the children, are totally convincing; & it's Jane's story that is the thread holding everything together, while forcing us -- the audience -- to question everything she says & doesright up to the final denouement, which I'm not going to give away....!I've seen the trailer for the sequel, which features Meryl Streep, no less! I can hardly wait!

Nomen est omen. Der Titel gibt das Thema vor. Wer noch einen Nachweis von der Krankheit der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft brauchte, findet ihn in dieser Serie. Hier wurden lediglich überall verbreitete Verhaltensweisen und -muster in einer Handlung von knapp sechs Stunden verdichtet und kulminiert. Praktisch alle Spielfilme beziehen ihre Dramen und Konflikte aus der Tatsache, dass die Menschen sich selbst und anderen gegenüber unehrlich und unaufrichtig sind. Man sagt einfach nicht, was wirklich ist, sondern verschweigt, beschönigt es oder lügt sich darum herum. So dürfte es auch in der wirklichen Gesellschaft aussehen. Zum zweiten wird auf krasse Weise deutlich, ein welches Maß von Aggressivität und Gewaltbereitschaft verbreitet ist. Täglich hören und sehen wir davon in den Medien. Auch hier wird die Handlung davon bestimmt, wobei es Ed zu exzessiver Brutalität kommen lässt. Er gibt sogar von sich zu, psychisch krank zu sein. So "bekommt er denn am Ende auch, was ihm gebührt". Es wird auch eindringlich gezeigt, in welchem Maße Kinder unter solchen Verhältnissen leiden und welche Prägungen sie davontragen oder welche Konsequenzen sie für sich daraus ziehen. Der Umgang mit Sexualität zieht sich durch die ganze Handlung, weil sich durch ihn die charakterlichen Verwerfungen der Akteure am intensivsten enthüllen. So hebt sich diese Serie, die vermutlich zum Schein unterhaltsam gehalten wurde, wegen ihrer ungeschminkten Darstellung über vergleichbare Serien hinaus. Außerdem werden an einigen Stellen, durch die Psychotherapeutin und in vertieften Dialogen unter den Frauen, einige tiefe Wahrheiten ausgesprochen. Sie heben sich wohltuend aus dem uferlosen, egoistischen Geschwätz hervor, das sonst die Szene beherrscht. Darin wird das ganze Ausmaß der kollektiven blinden Unbewusstheit der Bürger entlarvt. Es wird aber nicht gezeigt, wie dem zu entkommen wäre. Von dem einzigen Ausweg, der Meditation, wissen die Macher nichts, obwohl Bonnie mit ihren Yogastunden ihr schon nahe kommt. Es darf nicht unerwähnt bleiben, dass die Darsteller ihr Bestes geben. Besonders die Kinder wissen die Herzen der Zuschauer einzufangen. Und wirklich gut ist die Musik. Überwiegend sanft und melodiös und oft mit gehaltvollen Texten ausgestattet. Ich habe mir die DVDs, die mir unbekannt waren, wegen der erstklassigen Besetzung der Protagonistenrollen gekauft. Ich hatte keine hohen Erwartungen und wurde angenehm überrascht.

Une série que j'ai longuement hésité à prendre, car je me disais, oui bon, ça a pas l'air terrible, et combien je ne regrette pas !!!J'ai découvert un magnifique chef d'oeuvre, ou le rôle des femmes dans une société d'hommes est tellement bien décrit...Un petit quotidien de femmes au foyer ou qui travaille, qui luttent chacune pour leur integrité, qui ont des peurs ancrées en elles, des secrets inavouables, des doutes, sur fond de meurtre, oui mais quel meurtre...La profondeur des rapports en tant que couple et en tant que parents sont profondéments explorés, disséqués même, et on se sent tellement moins seules, car au fond, toutes les femmes se ressemblent tellement ...

Habe die Serie empfohlen bekommen und den Kauf nicht bereut. Es beginnt mit einem Verbrechen. Man weiß bis zur letzten Folge nicht, wer das Opfer ist oder der Täter-der Spannungsbogen wird die ganze Zeit gehalten. In der Rückblende dürfen wir Einblick nehmen in die vermeintlich perfekte Welt der gut situierten Familien im kalifornischen Küstenort Monterey. Die Hauptfiguren sind hierbei die Freundinnen Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Witherspoon) und Celeste Wright (Kidman). Beide Mütter und etwas gelangweilt von ihrem "Hausfrauen-Dasein". Neu nach Monterey zieht die junge Mutter Jane Chapman (Woodley), die sich sofort mit Madeline anfreundet, obwohl sie nicht aus reichen Verhältnissen kommt. Das Feindbild dieser Frauen ist Renata Klein. Eine erfolgreiche Geschäftsfrau, die anscheinend ALLES hat: eine Karriere, einen tollen Mann und eine süße Tochter. Sehr schnell wird klar, dass die schicken Strandhäuser und die tollen Kleider nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen können, dass hier gar nichts in bester Ordnung ist. Es geht um: Betrug, Untreue, Gewalt, Ängste, Frust, Eifersucht, Neid und totale Überforderung. Mich hat vor allem die schauspielerische Leistung von Witherspoon, Kidman und Woodley überzeugt. Sie tragen die Geschichte glaubhaft. Am Ende bleibt ein Mord, aber auch die ganz große Freundschaft!

Sehr schöne Serie! Anfangs dachte ich, dass es etwas oberflächlich bleiben könntE. Der Eindruck hat sich sehr schnell geändert. Die Charaktere entwickeln sich, man bekommt zu sehen, wie es unter der schönen Oberfläche bei den Personen/ Familien wirklich aussieht. Der Todesfall/Mord(?) wird erst in der letzten Folge aufgelöst, die Frage danach, was wohl passiert sein könnte, begleitet die Serie von der ersten Folge an. Tolle Musik begleitet viele Szenen und schöne Bilder aus der californiachen Gegend Monterrey und Big Sur. Klare Empfehlung, diese Miniserie zu schauen. Leider war sie mit ihren 7 Folgen viel zu schnell beendet.

Serie formidable en tout point. Rien n'est laissé au hasard, tout est soigneusement pensé et travaillé de la beaute des paysages à la complexité des personnages, le tout mis en valeur par une sélection musicale pointue, un casting formidable et une profondeur qui se révèle au fure et à mesure des épisodes. L'intrigue nous tient en haleine jusqu'au bout. Une sacré réussite..

I like this HBO limited series, I wonder if it will be back in another form cause it was taken from the book.an David E. Kelley said he wanted to keep it as close to the book as possible. never read the book so don’t know.but I do know if I wanted to know all about the rich an famous if I do I’ll watch Desperate Housewife's.to me this is a long drawn out of three family’s struggle that just goes back an forth with people behaving badly.from the get go there’s a murder then nothing, you see people being investigated like that show “True Detective” first season.it’s like a social satire of epic proportions that I can find on my street. there’s no meat or juicy stuff to it.just your every day run-of-the-mill people being bad. an one end I saw coming. no twist to this.some of this was very hard to watch, Nicole Kidman life with Alexander Skarsgård. that was tuff to handle.Runtime 370 Min.16x9 1.78:1.English 5.1 DTS-HD Master.

Was eine langweilige, dröge, uninspirierte Serie. Charaktere null überzeugend. Wer auf die Idee kam, dieses konstruierte Gezerre mit desperate Housewifes zu vergleichen, ist mir ein Rätsel. Schade ums Geld, wird gleich weiterverhökert. Habe nur vorgespult. Und dann aufgegeben.

Great piece of work of Yves Bélanger as director of the photography. Jean-Marc Vallée made a strong case with his nomination for the Golden Globes for best director in a TV series. He knows how to direct actors. Strong performance of Nicole Kidman (Celeste) & Reese Whiterspoon (Madaline) & Alexander Skarsgard (Perry) A must watch series.

Maitre Jean Marc Vallé a transposer une écriture oui oui sur écran absolument génial et qui plus est les 5 comédiennes sont magistral Mais que dire des enfants parvenire a leur fair donner la réplique au comédiens sans aucune baisse de rymthe Ses enfants sont la graine de future grands actrices acteurs qui grace a Maitre Vallé qui a cette facon de diriger avec souplesse consciense et responsabilité ce qui meme a ce très bas ages leur permetera d`avoir la capacité de faire une différence dans de future roles pour leur évolution personnelle et aussi pour le public qui va bénificier de tout Encore un IMMENSE MERCI POUR CETTE SÉRIE

Cette côte du nord de la Californie, battue par les vagues et le vent qui sert de toile de fond à ce drame a déjà été le théâtre de bien des passions ne serait-ce qu’avec Hitchcock à Bodega Bay un peu au nord de San Francisco alors que nous sommes ici à Monterey de l’autre côté au sud, l’autre film auquel cette Highway 1 me fait penser inévitablement étant le Basic Instinct de Paul Verhoeven.C’est le Bixby Creek Bridge sur la Highway 1 qui nous est montré dans la séquence introductive de chaque épisode (bien qu’il soit situé à 30 km plus au sud), ainsi que des enfants, point commun à chacun des couples que nous découvrons.Cette histoire est de fait dramatique car on nous annonce d’emblée 1 mort dont nous ne connaîtrons l’identité que dans l’épisode final.Ce sont les commentaires très positifs qui m’ont fait m’intéresser à ce programme et je craignais d’être déçue, peu réceptive a priori au cadre de vie « chicos » des familles dont nous suivons les interrelations. Mais heureusement on s’aperçoit vite que l’argent ne fait pas le bonheur …Et puis il y a la séquence du générique très réussie avec les enfants, des morceaux musicaux bien choisis tout au long des 7 épisodes, les relations entre les personnages bien étudiées et filmées qui font qu’on s’intéresse fortement à eux, et surtout celle qui émerge pour moi du casting … une Reese Witherspoon à la fois radieuse et pleine de peps dans son allant comme dans ses répliques. Wow !...Nicole Kidman est intéressante également tout comme Shailene Woodley à mille lieues de son personnage dans Divergente.Bref j’ai beaucoup aimé … moi aussi.

Excellente série qui nous embarque dans la vie normale mais pas si paisible d'un groupe de jeunes mamans. L'humour, la violence, la passion, la rancoeur, la tristesse, l'orgueil, la peur., la jalousie.. Tous ces sentiments sont extrèmement bien joués. Le scénario nous tient parfaitement en haleine. Le drame auquel on sait dès le départ qu'il a eu lieu est parfaitement géré.

La saison 1 de cette série "BIG LITTLE LIES" tient bien le suspense. On sait dès le 1er épisode qu'un crime a été commis mais il faut attendre le dernier épisode de cette saison 1 pour savoir QUI a été assassiné. Tout au long des épisodes, on trouve que quasi tous les personnages principaux pourraient aussi bien être la victime que... l'assassin.Le suspense ne se cantonne pas aux mamans mais aussi ...Je ne vous en dis pas plus pour ne pas vous gâcher le suspens, mais je vous invite à commander ce DVD.
