From the beginning, the Lily & Madeleine's calling card has been the breathtaking and intuitive union of their voices. As the sisters have grown as people and artists, so has their sound evolved. The scope is broadened here. The music is expansive, the instrumentation multi-layered. This is an entrancing production that allows both singers to stretch out in new directions. Like the sun slanting through a window in a Vermeer painting, it's an experience that captures the subtleties of both shadow and light.

Lil & Mad hit it right
This album by these talented sisters might be my favorite. Their new stuff has definitely made an impact, but this one has so many very memorable hits, like "Rabbit" and "Can't Admit it," but perhaps one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME comes with their last track, "Blue Blades." Minor chords make it mysterious and introspective, their harmonies make things sweet, and all in all it is one deep song that will get you right in the musical feels. Good work ladies.

Amended review
I saw this sister at the Over The Rhine concert 4 days ago. A great opening act with beautiful harmonies and simple instrumentation as backing. Upon return home their first two discs, not including their EP, were ordered. Lilly & Madeleine disc received first listen then next morning this album, Fumes. On first listen, I was shocked at how their wonderful voices in harmony were buried in the mix, muddy with heavy reverb. The melodies are there carrying wonderful songs. Later songs on discs improved given the mix toned down. But what was Paul Mahern, the producer and manager, thinking. He was so effective on Lilly and Madeleine's début disc. Simple instrumentation and voices front and center. Will I return to this disc for multiple listening. Yes because these young ladies are very good and are a refreshing sound. However, the début will be in heavier rotation. Will look forward to their next disc and hope that Mr. Mahern learns how not to present these artists and songs. He did so a good job on first. If you have a chance to see this duo please do so, you will not be disappointed. PS -- I purchased the cd's not download."Upon further review" The mix is better than I first realized and commented upon in the above the review. I listened initially through my audio-technical headphones and though the sound is usually excellent they "failed" me when first listening to "fumes". A 2nd and 3rd listening through my Focal speakers revealed a much improved sound. The vocals were more prominent and this is what makes these sisters so worth listening to. The sound is still more reverb than 1st disc yet not objectionable. My wife gives it 5 stars. I amended to 4 stars given the stunning simplicity of 1st disc . My apology Lily and Madeleine and especially Mr. Mahern for my initial review.

Complex Simplicity and Beauty
I very, very rarely write reviews about anything. In fact, this is the only music album I've reviewed, and I love music. So why do I feel the need to review Fumes? It's simple: I can't stop listening to these girls. I first heard them on NPR several months ago. I had an immediate, visceral reaction to their music and immediately bought their album. Their self-titled album is beautiful in its simplicity and calming tunes. It's the perfect showcase to the lost art of truly acoustic performances.Fumes is more complex, but they have managed very skillfully to keep their amazing harmonies without becoming a muddled mess. My favorite song right now is the title song, Fumes. I also particularly love Cabin Fever. Fumes is a more balanced album; it has up-tempo songs, as well as slower lullabies. They're growing and developing as artists. My hat's off to them. Keep it up.

4.5 stars
I really like this album. Lily & Madeleine is a must-buy artist for my husband and I. We saw them perform last summer and immediately bought their albums. This album shows definite growth. The only complaint I have about this CD is that the last song ends quite abruptly. And it feels like the song, and the CD, shouldn't be over. However, my husband really likes how the CD ends. Too each his own, right? =)Lily & Madeleine is great and I would recommend their albums. I can't wait for their next one!

Haunting melodies and beautiful vocal resonance
A lovely album with a haunting resonance and a touch of melancholy that makes it the musical equivalent of a well aged dry-red French wine - heard it first on NPR music and fell in love with the distilled emotion spread throughout the songs. For those who like their music a bit languid and not rushed, so that it slows you down and fills the soul, this is a great album. ;-)

Wonderful music to listen to while doing just about anything
Wonderful music to listen to while doing just about anything. Lil & Mad's voices are eclectic, soothing, & yet powerful in projecting the images of stories told in their songs. The beauty & accuracy of the vocal harmonies are mesmerizing! Fantastic & highly recommended, if you enjoy music that takes you away to a place of solace.

Another excellent album from the Jurkiewicz sisters
These sisters have a great work ethic. It comes through on this gorgeously produced album. Their voices lead the way through the 10-songs that are very well-placed in sequence. My favorites? "Fumes", "Rabbit", "Can't Admit It" and "Hold On To Now"....All of the songs are good-to-excellent and again, the sisters show-off their considerable musical talents on this fine album. If you get a chance to catch Lily & Madeleine Jurkiewicz live? Don't pass it up. They are BETTER performing live than they are on an album.
