Even Better Than the First Book!
Many series stay almost as good as the first book, but not better, and that is why, if I don’t like the first book, I don’t bother reading the rest of the series. Shannon Mayer is one of the FEW authors who start out books at a full run, and who ALWAYS delivers on her promises of saucy, smart, and capable heroines who hold their own, sometimes not so gracefully, but what would be the fun in a lead character who is perfect from the very beginning? Who listened to everything told to her? As a 53 year old woman, I am IN LOVE with the PWF group of authors/books. These heroines are even more relatable - they have many of the issues we “grown ass women” have (a quote from this book), and STILL get the job done, often BECAUSE they are “grown ass women” and know the world isn’t the one you see through rose-colored glasses, and neither are the men. This book, in which Breena, the main character, gets into a whole lot of trouble, whether she asks for it or not, feels soooooo true to how “one of us” would handle situations, making her more relatable to the women who mostly sit around and read these books. She still has a crush on the hot guy, but thinks that he is too hot for her, so she is suspicious, like she should be. None of her usual friends/cohorts are acting normally, so she has to depend, somewhat, on a new cast of characters who make her realize that she doesn’t need that job, that she thought she needed, nearly as much, and that she can form her own “merry band” of supernaturals who will be much more honest and faithful. I won’t talk about the facts of the book, but this second book is even better than the first one, and THAT would have been very difficult. RUN TO READ ALL OF MAYER’s books, if you like fun and laughter along with your paranormal action!

Too many old jokes
I really like this storyline but the self deprecating over the hill jokes are thrown in every other page. I get that it's important to the story, but we don't need to DETRACT from the storyline to talk about it.

Breena is Back!
Breena O’Rylee is back, still training with the Hollows Group, still not sure if she should lust over Bad Boy Crash or her ex-husband’s cousin Corb. Oh, and she is still determined to buy her Gran’s house. It is that determination to get back that house that sends Brenna on down dark alleys, into “in-betweens” and tangling with fairies to get the funds she needs. Ah, another day in the life for Breena! When I read the first book in this series, I liked it. I liked it a lot. But this second book has really fired me up! Breena is starting to find out what she is made of, and it’s not all sugar and spice – she is kicking it and taking no prisoners! As she is getting stronger, her group of trusted friends grows as well. And those friends are seriously a lot of fun – an emotional River Maid, a gentle Bigfoot shifter and a coquettish half siren to name some – and just add just enough humor to balance out the dark magic swirling around. It is whetting my appetite for the next Breena’s mission!

Plot Twists & Intrigue Aplenty
I absolutely LOVED book 1 and was stoked to jump into book 2 headfirst. The plot throughout the book becomes a bit more elusive and mysterious as the story continues. Breena is just as kick-butt as before, though the story takes a turn for the unexpected away from her job at the Hollows group. To be honest, it shouldn’t be that surprising considering Mayer’s other works. The quirk where she changes the F word to “ducks” continues and makes it even more endearing to the story. As for the plot, nothing is truly everything as it seems, and Mayer loves to keep you on your toes. Breena’s also quickly assembling her own team of supernaturals to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves while living in the grey area between the Council and the Hollows group. It’s refreshing that Breena develops nicely as a character without sugar-coating anything. Yes, she’s now been in Hollows training for weeks, and has made some improvements in the physicality of the job, but her abilities don’t magically improve astronomically. There are subtle changes which makes it even more realistic. My one critique is some of the little details that were missed prior to publication which I’ve pointed out to Mayer through correspondence. Usually her books are so polished by the time they published that this took me by surprise. But aside from the few inconsistencies I found, the plot twists and intrigue of the story kept me hooked until the very end. Can’t wait to read the next one, and I’m especially excited to hear from Shannon that there will be at least 6 books in the series, if not 9.

Buckle up buttercup, you're in for a ride!
Bree's adventure continues. Still a little sore from saving Eric from becoming the main ingredient in a spell to summon a demon, Bree is going to need a fresh bottle of Advil, because now the Fae need her help. Something big is going down in Savannah, and everyone is after a fae relic Bree has been hired to surveil. The question is who can she trust? The Seelie who hired her, but omitted details to the job, the Hallows Group that are all acting a little out of character, or the incredibly hot blacksmith with questionable morals? With her rag tag team of friends, Bree will work to stop the baddies in their tracks and deal with some life altering news. Time to pull up those big girl panties and grab some Advil. This book is non-stop action or major revelations. I couldn't put it down. In fact, I read it twice already. I love how relatable Bree is despite the supernatural aspect. I really enjoyed how conversational the book felt, like I sat down with Bree for some sweet tea to catch up on all the happenings. I highly recommend this book. There is no lull in the story and I highly anticipate the next book.

Hot men, Hot Flashes and Hot Magic
Midlife Fairy 🧚♀️ HunterThis second book in the Forty-Proof series starts five days after book one, and though you don’t have to have read that, it enriches this one if you have.Breena is a middle aged misfit, recently moved to her hometown of Savannah after twenty years, to try and get back her dead granny’s house that her ex husband stole from her whilst Bree was incarcerated in a mental health institute he’d put her in - because she could see things that don’t exist - according to ‘Himself’. The ex.He gaslighted her, emotionally abused her and still won’t let her live life now they’re divorced. And to be honest he’s a weakly weasle of a man with a superiority complex - don’t worry, he’ll get his ‘reward’ as due. There’s magic in Savannah and Bree now believes in it.She’s smart, can fight, tell off werewolves and is not afraid to own her mature, burgeoning hormones and man-crushes.Add in the fact she is a kick-ass, snarky forty-plus woman with curves and baggage - who adopts people wherever she goes - it’s a very fun read. And I love that #PWF is a new emerging sub genre - about time too.I can also relate to the hot flashes.Holy Hell this was fab and I know some future bad guys I think; enough bread crumbs and red herrings left scattered to form book three. So many things were answered in this one; why Crash * a very hot, dubious smith * is, well, complicated, the why of Sarge’s aggression, the importance of the house and - what you really do with boy butter. Those scenes. OMG I laughed so hard at this.To top it off, the ‘supporting cast’ includes her ex’s cousin Corb, ridiculously hot and young, a water maid Feish, who looks more than a bit like a fish, Eric the gentle shapeshifter’Bigfoot’ who bakes and gardens, and a wobbly dead skeleton called Robert, and this ensemble rocks. There’s plenty of tension, action, emotion, laughter and surprises to be had.I absolutely loved this. Now go buy it.

You're for a wild ride in Breena's world
I loved this second installment of Forty Proof series even more than the first one and I loved first one so much. I'm absolutely invested into Breena's story! She is amazing in her forties! As is her mismatched crew of different crazies. They are phenomenal all together. Family which is created not of blood but heart. This is something I adore Shannon Mayer does in her incredible stories.Story continues where it finished in first book and it's non stop action packed, full with dangerous twists and craziness. Can't wait for the next book in this series! I highly recommend this series to everyone, no matter how old you're.

I read this in a couple of hours....thanks to coronavirus.....so glad I found these stories they are excellent and keep you turning the page to find out whether breena survives all those that wish to kill her. She has the hots for a king who she know is bad for her, she is dissed everyone as old and average and silly but shes the one who has loyal allies and comes out hurting but a winner. Cannot wait for book 3

A brilliant read!
This book is just brilliant! I didn't believe it could be better than the first book but as I kept reading, it got better and better! Crash is H.O.T! Bree is amazing. I love that she's 41 with aches and pains and experience! I love her crew too. What a motley bunch! The best is still Robert and now Skeletor! I had the biggest grin on my face reading those parts of the story. I can't wait to read more!

Amazing read
Great book to read but the coordinated at the end means you might as well purchase all books in this series . My first in fictional books sounded ok but cannot but this down I read it in a couple of hours. Found myself laughing out loud in places. Growing to love this author. I'm late thirties but from teens to any age should find this a great read.
