It generate rational understanding and shift the paradigm in Islamic understanding. It tunes the Quranic understanding with the contemporary knowledge. The book take Quran as authenticity standard. There is a need to see beyond Arabic dictionaries and to treat the Quran as it’s own dictionary, because available dictionaries, which were created less than a thousand years ago, may include meaning taken from old exegetes which may create conflicts. For example the word abrogation maybe eliminated and replaced with the word transcribe or copying, because God’s word always remain valid under circumstances and times. It is a leap forward to know the essence of the Quran. It integrates word of God which is the Quran with work of God which is our universe. Translation wise, the word used as ‘ambiguous verse’ should be replaced with the word ‘allegorical or metaphoric verse’ which better explain the Arabic word. Great work. Great book. Not a new suggestion
What Mr. Shahrur is suggesting is already being practiced in shia islam, who follow the prophets progeny and their explanation of Quran. Sunni Islam has been misguided by our ulemas from the early days of Islam.
