Great Actors!
Loved this movie. However, the end of Episode 3 seemed like it was not a true "ending" of the story.

Who Knew What, When
Acorn TV has this series in three episodes. Even though it is from 2003 it rings true today in 2017. Michael Kitchen, is, of course, excellent in his character, but so was Phyllis Logan, Mrs. Hughes, from Downton Abbey and Sophie Oknedo, who we know from many British Series and films. This is a convoluted story, and once we get into it, we wonder, could this really occur? Stranger things have happened, of course. From what I have read there are several minutes deleted from this series that could give us a more informative view of the characters. The issue of love, affairs, money, and murder are all intwined, and a big part of this series is figuring out who knew what, when.Recommended. prisrob 11-13-17

Suspended disbelief required
This is a suspense-horror type program. It is based on the old adage that once we deceive a web we weave. The general theme of the video is the unraveling of the alibi of a murderer. There are many unrealistic aspect of the program that will irritate detective story fans. For me it was the characters having totally wrong actions. There is this older man who has the skills to start and run a business. There is a young woman who is not very smart and therefore has a job in a a government agency answering simple questions from the public on the telephone. After the first 15 minutes setting up the situation they behave oppositely. The man becomes stupid and allows the woman to exercise superb crises leadership skills over him. She suddenly becomes an expert on police investigation procedures and accounting. I wondered if she had these skills why she did not have a job as a manager at a commercial company. Another example of the numerous problems that will insult the intelligence of an adult is a police investigation of a car crash. They pronounce it an accident in spite of no skid marks and the transmission being in neutral. There are many other examples of this unrealistic nature of the video. Again, horror and suspense fans will probably not be bothered by them.

Absolutely fun!!!
Excellent cast who I'd only seen previously in serious roles. They all carried the clever plot very well. Sophie was perfect for her role & not many could have carried it off. It was fun to see Phyllis Logan all "undone." Usually she's the perfect, poised, not a hair out of place English lady. In this show she's got her hair stuck in her collar, scuffling or"schleping" her shoes as she walks, muttering & drinking all at the same time.Perhaps the most interesting & funny aspect was the writer's way of having "Marci"describe events in various ways from completely different viewpoints. The events could have turned upside down & turned an accidental death into several prison sentences, ruined self images & ruined a business that wasn't really ruined.A heartwarming part was the complete loyalty of their best friends.

Good story if unbelievable
I enjoyed this a lot but had to suspend all my critical thinking facilities. Could the British police be that dumb? I doubt it. What a convoluted web of lies the chief characters came up with. The young woman who comes upon the possible murder is a pathological liar of the first order. I stood in awe of the lies she came up with, one after the other, at work, in the case. The sister and brother-in-law too were all too ready to participate in the cover-up. Despite all that, it was a compelling story with good acting. I wouldn't spend money on it tho.

Another example of strong Brit tv
This is another captivating job of writing by Paul Abbott ('State of Play', 'Shameless'), and although it may strain our credulity a bit, the strong performances by Michael Kitchen, Sophie Okonedo and Phyllis Logan bring this piece up to a standard not reached by most US films in wide release. From what I've seen of Abbott's pieces, he can really write and he has heart. Kitchen's role in this is certainly not as commanding as that of his loveable Foyle, - Sophie Okonedo really has the lead in this, and she's amazing. I don't agree with the other reviewer here, and wasn't interested in quibbling mystery/horror fare - it's not a mystery at all, it's a character study. And although the eventual ending might be a tad anticlimactic, every moment getting there, watching actors of this caliber get shuffled about in Abbott's twists and turns, was just delightful. Let's get all of Abbott's work out on dvd here in the States, what do you say?

This is an edited version
A great movie in its full uncut version, but this DVD is heavily edited. As a result, you don't get the full range of the characters personalities, ie Greg's " I only take showers" scene at Marcy's apartment, and Linda's confession to her dead lover's dad that she is actually married to Greg and could he keep it quiet? There were other cuts that tended to help explain the characters motives and actions. I felt the plot twists were probably harder to follow as a result. If you can find the full version, buy it. It is a darkly funny and even romantic film. Don't buy this edited version. 4 stars for the full movie only. Should be 1 star for this DVD version.

WOW! A SUPER SLEEPER
Alibi is a deceptive little sleeper drama. It just rolls along, threading various little pieces together into one great ending. Subtle British humor adds just the right touch to keep Alibi from dragging down (watch Kitchen’s eye rolls). Everything works but you do have to pay attention (subtitles help) as things move right along. It’s not very impressive to look at on the cover but it’s a real gem. No spoilers here and you don’t want to read any as it would totally spoil the WHOLE movie! While some reviews would like to give (-) ratings, this one deserves MORE than 5 stars.
