Bar Harbor in Latvia...
I had some on the shelf from the Gulf of Maine and ordered some more from this site. The set I got have exactly the same packaging...except for some details. Not product of Canada, not Gulf of Maine. Product of Latvia, from the North Sea. Fat content a little bit less...total difference of 10 calories per serving size. Still sustainable fishery and with Latvia subject to EU food rules, no qualms about quality, but still a surprise.

Excellent product--here's why the can says "product of Latvia"
If you care about the quality of your fish--Bar Harbor is a good company--small enough to remain concerned about the ecology of the ocean they harvest from. The herring off the coast of Maine have a declining population, so they are fishing in the upper North Atlantic in the North Sea--I spoke with Bar Harbor at length. the herring (kippers) are processed in Latvia, but are a product of an American company--Bar Harbor. They do not have a large processing plant, so they outsource the canning of the kippers, but not the catch.Bar Harbor still catches some of their products off the coast of Maine--lobster and clams, both of which still have healthy populations. Just to be clear--I'm a regular person, not affiliated with Bar Harbor in any way. I do care a lot about the quality of the fish I buy. There are horror stories of bad practices in fishing--both wild and farmed. It really DOES matter where you get your fish.I looked at independent sources, there are plenty and the collapse of herring is well documented. Here is a quote from just one of the many sources I reviewed: "the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) took the unusual step of cutting the catch limit for Atlantic herring midway through the fishing season in an effort to avert even deeper cuts in the future. The latest scientific survey showed a dramatic drop in the next generation of herring, meaning that very few will reach adulthood, threatening the health of the population. Atlantic herring are collapsing, and recovery is likely to take many years."If you really want good healthy delicious fish--ultimately it comes back to us. The garbage, radioactive waste, chemical waste, and human/agricultural waste we dump in rivers and the ocean is poisoning our waters and our American heritage, of which we should care about passing on to our future citizens. Push for clean up efforts, laws that say absolutely no dumping in rivers or seas, and don't buy so much plastic crap you don't need anyway. Everything ends up in the ocean eventually....and on your plate.

Great Fish... two minor issue to be aware of
These are delicious. Two things to be aware of: first, as several other reviewers have noted, the opening ring on the can doesn’t work. It breaks right off before the can is at all open. This would be a bad problem except that a conventional can opener works fine. But, if you’re thinking of these for a picnic or camping, plan to bring a can opener.Second issue: these are packed in water and come out wet. If you’re thinking, for example, of a sandwich, you will need a paper towel to pat the fish dry.Otherwise, this is good quality fish with good texture and great flavor.

Did not enjoy
I eat a canned fish everyday as part of my diet. Smoked kippers, mackerel, trout, eel, and even stinky Sardines, I love it all. I cooked this with some tomato and scrambled eggs, raised my fork in anticipation and the smell was "off". I know it is a smoked fish so I tasted it and then I threw it away. I don't know what it was but I won't open another can and I returned the case. Too bad, I really wanted to like this brand. It had to be unpleasant for me not to try to power through it and find something good about it, just was not happening.

This one is the best
I’ve tried many brands of kippers. These are by far the best in flavor and quality. The are packed with care (looks like packed by hand and not just dumped into a can and falling apart). There are usually between 2-4 kippers so you can tell they are packed by weight. The flavor is the best. My husband has bought every brand and this is the only one I like, because of the care given in packing and the high quality flavor and taste). I highly recommend this.

Bait and Switch expected Herring from Gulf of Maine but received a different fish from North Sea
Advertised as herring from The Gulf of Maine and as a product of Canada. Instead received herring from the North Sea which is a product of Latvia. Closer reading of label shows Gulf of Maine Herring has 60% more Omega 3 oils (8 Grams) vs 5 grams for the North Sea product.

Absolutely delicious!
I have a significant amount of food intolerances, and my diet mainly consists of eating fish, chicken, bison, veal, a few select vegetables, salad greens, and several allowable fruits. These Smoked Kippers are superb and go very well with a salad and organic sprouted brown rice or organic quinoa. I love fish, thankfully, and I'm so pleased to be able to get these from Amazon.

5 stars Until
Bar Harbor brand kippers in water are really good tasting.Had got 2 trial cans of Bar Harbor Kippers from another site to try & they were terrific. So ordered a 12 pack & they were also terrific & was going to give them 5 stars until had the 3rd,4th,5th & 6th cans in which they were crunchy either because of cartilage or scales. The 7th can was alright like the 1st 2 cans of this 12 pack & the 2 trial cans. Not sure how the last 5 cans will be like;hopefully it was only 4 bad cans that were crunchy.Otherwise great Kosher Certified O-U snack either plain or with horseradish also good on crackers or as sandwiches.Other good Kosher Certified kippers brands are:"Roland" Certified O-U & "Polar" Certified Circle K-P with stamp on back,"Brunswick" Certified O-U,"Crown Prince" Certified O-U
