There is little competition on the market for Monteverdi's madrigals. Alessandrini comes close but remains incomplete. And completeness is not the only difference - La Venexiana performs with more depth and character of expression, especially in the later theatrical madrigals, while Concerto Italiano tends to sound more like a well-polished surface, smooth and shiny. The sound quality favors La Venexiana as well, with just a little more resonance and spatial separation. There is certainly enough difference that many listeners will want both.If I really knew this material I'd offer the reader a number of track-by-track comparisons, but the one that comes most to mind is the performance of Lamento della Ninfa, which demonstrates the qualities I mentioned above nearly to the point of romanticism, something I have always wanted to hear in Monteverdi but seems to be too often missing in today's HIP environment. The soprano on that track is Roberta Mameli, a name I was not familiar with.But I also mention Roberta because, to find who she is, I must consult the original documentation on a PDF. This would be annoying enough, but Glossa actually included a printed booklet as well - with a near-duplicate of the track listings on the PDFs, with all track titles and performer names for each CD, but the booklet OMITS the performers' initials that footnote the tracks. Duh. So when I heard Roberta turn the Lamento into pure gold and couldn't easily match her name to the track title, my listening pleasure took a little hit...Now let's talk about packaging. The box looks good on the shelf, for what that's worth, but Glossa either made it too deep or they designed it to be used with cardboard sleeves and not paper ones. Guess which kind I got. And I peer through the little windows of these paper sleeves and what do I see? Printing so miniscule that all CDs look identical without a reading lamp and magnifying glasses. And the sleeves tend to get snagged on each other once the blind shuffling begins.Still the music is sublime - though the Corsica concert didn't make much of a first impression - and the PDFs have the lyrics. Many of the same singers are found on both options mentioned herein, and also on some fine recordings by Il Complesso Barocco, but I hear them used to their best potential under Claudio Cavina's direction. For Monteverdi lovers this is one of the essential reissues of 2014, and for those who aren't quite there yet this might do the job...

I rank Monteverdi among the top ten composers of all time. His works straddles genres and eras, and the madrigal collections first cement his place as one of the greatest composers in the preeminent secular genre of the Renaissance, and then begin the work of establishing him as the first great composer of the Baroque age he helped create.La Venexiana is one of the great vocal ensembles of the current Millennium, and their amazing labors on behalf of Monteverdi will be an enduring legacy.If you want to feel the full power of these rich settings of Italian poetry, these are the recordings to seek out. Passion, vocal beauty and unsurpassed expression of the language: it is hard to imagine how this music could be better performed.

Wonderful performances of delightful music. I am subtracting one half star for lack of libretto.One draw back with the majority of box sets is this lact. It must be a space issue?

This is a fine recording, sometimes a bit lacking in energy, but for the most part really wonderful.

I own all books individually, and they are both beautifully packaged and incomparably well sung. They even have useful notes.Now you can own them inexpensively, with lower production values. This is a fair cost saving measure from Glossa, who charged appropriately for exquisite packaging.The performances remain extravagantly lovely. You will never have heard Monteverdi like this. Most important, you will understand what the big deal was about this composer. I love his other work, but these madrigals astonish.By the way, Claudio Cavina, the director and countertenor, died a few years back. This is all there will be.

La Venexiana do a great Jon with this collections of madrigals. Contrary to some reviews, texts and translations are provided but via a downloadable pdf.

Los ocho libros de madrigales de Monteverdi constituyen una de las obras mas fascinantes de la música clásica. Y esta edición los reúne en una magnífica interpretación. Incluye un "bonus cd" con los textos y traducciones en pdf y una actuación en vivo. Recomendable.

Wer die Einspielungen Monteverdis Madrigalbücher der Truppe La Venexiana nicht schon längst hat bzw. nur Teile hat, kann nun bedenkenlos zugreifen. Zur Musik Monteverdis muss man nichts weiter sagen. Es handelt sich um musikhistorisch äußerst wertvolle Stücke, die eine Zeit des musikalischen Umbruchs dokumentieren. Kontemplativ geistliche Musik, schwelgende Liebeslieder, swingende Spottgesänge, musikalische Erzählungen, so manche musikalische Gattung auch der Popmusik baut auf Strukturen auf, die hier bereits perfektioniert wurden. Und durch die Eigenheit der Alten Musik, Raum und Möglichkeit für Variation und Interpretation zu lassen, beweist Monteverdis Musik eine Zeitlosigkeit, die ihresgleichen sucht. 400 Jahre alt? Unmöglich!La Venexiana bewegt sich auf der Höhe der Zeit, was die Erforschung der Alten Musik betrifft. Als Gesamtaufnahme geben sie sich konkurrenzlos, jedes einzelne Stück ist sauber für sich herausgearbeitet, die Interpretationen bleiben an dem, was derText verlangt. Die Musiker singen und spielen frisch und dennoch traditionsbewusst, keine übertriebene Verjazzung, wie sie es später praktizierten, und dennoch oder gerade deshalb spürt man Monteverdis ungeheure revolutionäre Bedeutung. Keiner weiß, wie die Musik damals geklungen haben mochte, weit entfernt können La Venexiana nicht sein.Einen Vergleich müssen sie freilich fürchten: Rinaldo Alessandrini spielte mit dem Concerto Italiano viele Madrigale noch eindringlicher, noch näher an Monteverdis (vermutlichem) Ursprung ein - aber eben nicht alle. Zudem halte ich die Stimmen des Concerto Italiano für klangschöner, insbesondere auffällig bei den mehr solistisch vorgetragenen späteren Madrigalen. Was die vokalen Leistungen von La Venexiana nicht schmälern soll! Und da Monteverdi eben immer etwas anders klingen kann, dürfen mehrere Aufnahmen nebeneinander bestehen.Auf jeden Fall lohnt sich diese Box schon aufgrund ihrer Vollständigkeit und des hohen, wenn auch nicht konkurrenzlosen Niveaus. Für den Preis (sollte sich Amazon denn mal auf einen einpendeln, er scheint schon gesprungen zu sein) allemal.Stichwort Vollständigkeit: Nicht enthalten ist die Einspielung der Scherzi Musicali, die man meines Erachtens auch ohne Madrigalbuch-Nummer in die "Complete Madrigals" hätte integrieren können. Allerdings ergäbe sich dann kein homogenes Bild mehr, ab hier frönte La Venexiana einem unverhohlen jazzigen Ansatz - Scherzi Musicali eben.Die Verpackung zeigt sich spartanisch - einfache Papierhüllen in Box. Vorbildlich hingegen, dass auf der "Bonus-CD" mit Live-Einspielungen die kompletten ausführlichen Einlagen der Einzel-CDs mit Text (und Übersetzung, auch deutscher!) als PDF-Dateien beigefügt sind.
