British jazz in the sixties
This CD is a set of recordings from BBC radio's Jazz Club and presents a forgoten fact that Britain along with a lot of Europe had some great musicians in those far off days of wine and roses.Presented with the humour of Humphrey Lyttleton with his other talent as all round entertainer."Humph" in the first session which was recorded in august 1966 and Humph draws the attention of the audience to the fact that soon a man would walk on the moon, this was before the Apollo landing. He joking says that soon the popular word in song titles of the songs of the romantic word Moon may be a useless term after the moon landing. There are hints of the budding emergence of "Humph" the funny man from {Sorry I Haven't a Clue} soon to emerge for public consumption. As for the music of course the band is excelent and the three sets of recordings loosly cover one theme per session.Even with the "Ooh are" of Lenny Hastings on drums. The last session recorded in 1972 is made up of tunes writen in the year 1924.There is a a great version of Fascinating Rhythm with John Barnes with Roy Williams working their way through a variation with a sound that is similar to Gerry Mulligan with Bob Brookmeyer bubbling along.Ignore the bargain basment price because this is an excelent buy worth twice the price.
