Good enough for riding but a hassle when walking
When you are riding a bike, these are perfect for holding a bottled water but not sure about wide-mouth bottles one might have.Only thing I’ll say is that when you are walking, the physics of a bottle hanging off your waist is that it swings wildly.You’ll just need to unclip the bottle (or steady it with your hand) when you are walking for a bit.

Easy and convenient, great for day hikes, maybe too heavy for a thru hike
This is a convenient way to hold a bottle of water handy while hiking (or shopping, or doing anything). Hydration is so important. I'm happy with this -- undecided about whether I will take it on the AT (it's not light, but that means it is sturdy). It's not heavy on a day hike, but when ounces matter . . .

You have a few options to carry a bottle. Hold it in your hand which will warm it if you don't finish it quickly. Put it in a pocket, body heat will also warm it. Or put it in a bag of sorts which would require you to potentially take it off and reach for it. Having a clip like this allows me to attach it to a d ring in front of my backpack in arms reach and quickly reach my drink and hydrate. This is great not having to take off my 20 pound camera bag in the middle of a crowded sidewalk to reach for it. Instead its right in front and easy to access.
