Helping me to walk gently
I have known Lisa McMinn for a number of years. In fact our family had a pleasant visit to the McMinn's small farm last summer. When I heard about her new book, I was eager to read it. I must say I was both affirmed and convicted: affirmed because I've thought about many of the issues McMinn raised; convicted that I am not walking as gently on the earth as I should. Lisa's style of writing in itself is very gentle. I was not berated and made to feel guilty, although there are any number of changes I realize I should make in my lifestyle.Chapter 4, "Living in the Marketplace," is typical of her helpful writing style. As she states: "Following are seven principles that can guide you as you attempt to walk gently in the marketplace, focusing choices on ethics and goodwill. My goal is to participate in the marketplace responsibly, appreciatively and compassionately. Sometimes that involves welcoming ingenuous products into my life; always it involves resisting the compulsion to buy now, buy lots, buy blindly and strive to have it all."Most chapters end with a listing of resources to help me learn more about the issues addressed and find ways to respond more effectively. Passionate and Practical
I read "The Contented Soul" first, and when I saw this book by Lisa Graham McMinn, I was thrilled to read it. I loved how at the end of the each chapter there was a section that pointed the reader towards additional information. I have found some of those resources very helpful. I also liked that the authors provided practical next steps, rather than presenting an overall problem and leaving the reader rather hopeless. I have been able to implement several changes to my lifestyle as a result of this books practical guidance! I highly recommend this to christians who want to enter into deliberate thoughtfulness regarding our relationship to creation.
