Hilarious - If You Know What It's Talking About
So this film is a "disaster movie" parody. It is also parodying the general culture of the 70s. If you were cognizant enough to remember how culture looked in the 70s, you are likely to be doubled over in laughter for a good part of this film. If you weren't cognizant enough to comprehend what was going on back then, there are aspects of this movie that you will likely consider to be somewhat mysterious. But if so, it's you - it's not the movie. There are allusions to the pop music of the day, to the movie "Jaws," to "Night of the Living Dead," to Bruce Lee movies, to the OJ Simpson commercials, to various advertising and programming novelties of the era, to the political landscape of the era, and so on.One of the features of this film that is clearly mocking 70s culture, but which those who were not alive during that time may not "get," is the crawler that appears out of nowhere on at least two occasions during the film.During the 70s (and even into the mid-80s), most weekend programming was the concern of local programmers. There was not nationally-standardized programming the way that there is now. Local television stations might use weekends to show old movies (A station local to me showed what was called "Creature Feature," which was a program showing, at various times, either one or two horror/disaster/monster movies at the time.) and might use a local "celebrity" (or might even manufacture a local "celebrity" just for this purpose) to host. These shows would have a major sponsor - usually a local furniture, construction, aluminum-siding, or auto sales company - and at random moments during the broadcast, Godzilla or Dracula would be joined on your screen by a crawler touting the effectiveness of the major sponsor's product or advertising the month's "special sale." It was something that folks barely noticed back then, but does seem quite hilarious in retrospect. The movie is funny just on the surface. But if you are plugged in to 70s culture enough to pick up on the cultural references, it becomes hilarious. It is worth a watch by anyone.

A cinematic triumph. A piece de resistance. Oscar material. (Cult classic)
Seriously, if you have any obnoxious, bothersome or irritating family (kind of redundant huh?j visit over the Holidays insist they watch this to the bitter end. They will be much quieter for days afterward. Probably insomnia or even nightmares. Excuse me, I have to go. “ Hey wifey, pass the ketchup.” Aaaargh!!!!!

George Clooney is in this gem of a movie.

“Of course, we didn't have pizzas in the great war. No, we starved...”
Utter nonsense. When it’s funny everything is a joke, when it’s not…it just lies there like a squashed tomato. But I had to watch it. And I did laugh on occasion. I won’t call it high art but it definitely has a place in film history, if nothing else.

Funniest Satire Ever.
This film is hilarious. Great lines, classic scenes, like the girl eating cereal from a Wheaties box that is labeled Steroids instead of Wheaties, or the girl entering the hotel room and the answer the airman gives to the other man in the bedroom who asks "Who is it?" I won't spoil it for you, but this movie is full of these great lines. The cable car scene with the description that would be another spoiler is pure genius. "Mars Attacks" ripped off the ending of this film without giving them any credit. They should have sued Tim Burton and Warner Bros. for stealing their plot. They would have won.

A stupidly fun classic B-Movie!
If you are a B-movie cult classic fan and haven't seen this one yet, you have to add it to your list to watch. I'm old enough to remember when this flick came out and still crack up at many of the references (like a Japanese man knocking a photo of the U.S.S. Arizona off the wall and destroying it)...and several other really cheesy but slap-stick funny references. If you aren't someone who remembers Watergate, or Gerald Ford being President (at least Jimmy Carter)...then many of the funny references may not seem funny to you as they were very current at the time but you still may crack up at the sheer stupidity of it all. My 14 year old son rolled his eyes many times but still laughed and now loves to torture his father with the song "Puberty Love" lol. His nerd right of passage is now nearly complete!

Classic self-aware American comedy that set the stage for Naked Gun, Anchorman, and the ilk..
I don't know anyone with any intelligence or sense of humor would or could possibly give this film a low rating. It is pure genius. It doesn't take itself seriously, and with the budget they had, it's clear they didn't take themselves seriously, nor were they trying to...This film deserves a seat at the top with Classic Comedy movies, as it most certainly led to the blockbuster films listed in the title.sure, the acting, photography, SFX, music, etc., isn't "pro quality", but that's part of the charm. You have to watch this movie with the right frame of mind and sort of know what you're stepping into before you can properly enjoy it.

Amazing Movie
Mixing a bizarre plot with tongue-in-cheek humour has created an amazing movie. Some may say “the worst movie ever made” but that is superficial criticism due to stereotyping this outrider of the genre while ignoring the fact that really bad movies take themselves seriously therefore fail but here, they are fully aware of what they are doing and how to it. This movie possesses the creativity and self-depreciating humour that is the key to this style of entertainment.
