Engaging, witty, cute. A great read!
I bought this for my niece and thought I'd take a quick look before sending it to her. I ended up reading the whole thing cover to cover! It's engaging, witty and cute - how does Gallagher make a square-headed legless robot who is supposed to be one of the bad guys so lovable? And I appreciated the little nods and jokes to adults, like the phrases "Why I oughta..." and "Oh the humanity!" It reminded me of how the old-time comics used to do that. Also, beautiful bright bold illustrations perfect for young kids.

This book is a game changer for kids learning to read!
Thank you, John Gallagher, for creating this awesome book. Our younger boys (8 and 11) are obsessed with it since it arrived October 6th and they are already anxiously awaiting the next one (which we pre ordered already!). The story line and the graphics are great and has captured their true interest in reading every day! It was a bit of a struggle to get them reading every day with joy (especially for our 8 year old) but after reading this book, they are so excited about reading...for that I give you a big Thank you!! We are looking forward to reading the next one and hopefully many more to come.

Kids love it, I am less impressed
I am giving this book 5 stars b/c I bought it for my daughter (6 yo), and she really enjoys it, and interestingly, my 3 year old son asks to listen to this book a lot as well, which is not typical for chapter books for him. So, since the book is FOR them, and they like it, it deserves 5 stars. I initially got it because I really liked that there was a black girl scientist as a main character. I will say that I feel that it is not as well written as the DogMan books (and I think Captain Underpants is not as well written as DogMan, even though they are the same author)--in terms of being able to easily follow the plot and the language. But, as I said, if the kids like it, I love it.

Great start to a series!
I gave this book to my 7 year old and it quickly became a favorite. He has read it several times already, and keeps asking when the next book will be out. It's written comic book style, which is great. He used to refuse to read until I discovered these types of books. This is a great addition to his collection!

Pretty Good
My kid seemed to enjoy this first book and that’s really all that matters. However, if you’ve read Dog Man or Investigators, this feels like a slight step down in terms of story, cleverness, and illustrations. My kids are also revisiting this one a lot less. It’s like watching a mid-tier DC movie after watching some really good Marvel movies. Still haven’t decided if we’re getting the other books. This would’ve been better as a library checkout.

It teaches you about friendship.
We bought Max Meow for our daughter's 11th birthday as she is a big graphic novel reader. She loved the graphics and laughed a lot at the very funny parts in the book. She was lucky to meet John and she says he is a 'very lovely, nice and funny man'. She can't wait for his next book to be released.

Get your kids to read, and you will enjoy it too!
Max is a cool cat after our heart. Our 11 year old boy, enjoyed this book immensely. Now he reads real chapter book stuff. But, for enjoyable before bedtime super fun and silly downtime reading give Max meow a try. It’s purrrrfect.
