The Best Food We Brought Camping
The Best Food We Brought Camping Out of everything we packed for meals on our recent camping trip, the Mountain House Macaroni & Cheese was hands down the favorite—especially for my kid. We had a lot of food options, but this was the one thing he actually got excited about and finished every bite of. It was easy to make, tasted great, and after a long day in the woods, it was pure comfort in a pouch. Out of all the food we brought, this was the winner. I’ll definitely be bringing more next time.

The only ones I want
I’m not “out-doorsie” but I like to be prepared for emergencies. I had these when hurricane Helene hit Asheville. Tastes, smells great. Being able to cook inside its own package makes it easy. It’s resealable which is good because it’s filling. Initially thought it was too expensive but once having one for dinner, it costs the same or less than a fast food meal that would give you the same amount of satiation.

Takes 20 minutes!
I tried both this and another popular brand of Mac and Cheese for easy backpacking dinners, and this was my favorite. Definitely more of a "Classic" Mac and Cheese taste. The only issue I had was that you really need to let it sit for 20 minutes before you eat it. It was still a bit on the crunchy side after that, but I ate it and it didn't give me a stomach ache or anything. Next time I'll try to keep the bag extra warm / insulated, stir after 10 minutes, then wait another 10 before eating. I'll also bring sun-dried tomatoes and maybe a pouch of tabasco or similar for added flavor.

Decent for freeze dried food.
Always nice to have a few of these on hand. I've always been satisfied with this brand.

Yum
Stays good forever and if you use the right amount of water it comes out like perfectly cooked Mac.

Another hit
Second mountain house meal we’ve tried and another winner. My son devoured the mac and cheese. So easy to make and they actually taste good! One thing I will say is the portion size really isn’t big enough to fill two people. Maybe if you’re eating it with some bread or in a survival type situation.

Nowhere close to as good as I expected
I have heard good things about this flavor of mountain house and have enjoyed other flavors of mountain House foods. I brought two of these on my camping trip, the first one I followed the instructions exactly with the right amount of water. However, the pasta came out so soupy, additionally, the noodles were not fully cooked, and I was really disappointed by the flavor. I did not taste authentic at all. The next day I tried again with the next packet, made sure to add a little less water, so it would be less soupy, that helped the flavor a little bit, but I was still disappointed with how the noodles were cooked after using boiling water and the overall flavor and cheese they use could definitely be improved a lot. On my next camping trip. I am considering bringing his mac & cheese instead as I think it would be almost the same effort to cook and it would taste so much better.

This is the first time I’m trying this. Reviews from others have made me expect a certain sort of quality and taste to the Mountain House brand, and this mac and cheese doesn’t disappoint on that. Pros: 1) Easy to rehydrate - it just needs 325ml of boiling water; 2) Taste is pretty good, although the saltiness of it is higher than my preference. But since I’m planning to have this for my emergency stash and won’t be eating it regularly, I think the salt content is all right for this goal; 3) The cheese thickened into a nice sauce coat instead of being watery; 4) The amount for one pouch seems enough for my husband and me to have a filling meal. Cons: 1) Takes maybe five minutes longer than the suggested timings to get the macaroni to become soft enough to eat, rather than have that slight bit of crunch that indicates the macaroni hasn’t fully rehydrated yet. Note: Maybe adding some chilli flakes would break up the potentially monotonous and too-rich taste of the cheese, but this is simply a personal taste reference. All in all, it’s a good buy and I intend to get more pouches to store.
