Favorite power ball for strength and rehab, auto-start is a game-changer!
I am a physical therapist and grip strength enthusiast. I've used several different power balls over the years and I can honestly say that this is one of my favorites. Other models start with a pull-string or supposedly really fast hand-starting of the wheel (which I have NEVER successfully performed), but the auto-start on this thing is easy and intuitive. Instead of having to re-wind the string if you pull it just wrong or don't get it spinning up on the first try, you can quickly reset and start this ball spinning again.Mass, resistance, and feel in the hand is comparable to most of the other power balls out there, but the auto-start is a game-changer. I've used this with a few of my patients dealing with arm/hand/nerve injuries over the past week or so and they've all been successful getting it started and then getting a good workout with it on the first day; much easier than dealing with the frustration of using the string-started power balls. The nice thing is that because the resistance is derived from the inertia of the spinning ball, you'll only get as much resistance as you have strength to put into it. It won't spin faster than you can make it spin. It can definitely challenge your endurance (great for rehab!) but you're not going to get crazy jacked forearms and hands from just power balls, but they're much more joint and tendon friendly than heavy torsion spring grippers. The only con I've found, if you can call it that, is that it doesn't have a RPM gauge like some power balls do. However, I popped the RPM gauge out of the top of one of my others and put in this and it works great (the little cap on the top has the same design, making it an easy swap). RPM gauges do take up a bit more space in the hand though, so that could be problematic for people with smaller hands. All in all, this is a great spin (ha!) on an old product and a good value.

great to use once you get the hang of starting off
Could not get this going at first and emailed the company. Got a quick response with a link to a utube video. That helped immensely. For me it was important not only to get the rotor ball wound up completely but to also make sure I was holding the parallel halo in my hand correctly so my wrist action worked in tandem or parallel to the gyro action inside. We also discovered that it was easier to feel the correct movement needed by fixing the elbow in place on a table at the start of an exercise session until we could feel the spinning of the gyro inside the halo. Once we got the hang of it and had the gyro inside spinning well we could do it with the elbow free allowing the working of more muscle groups. This is a really neat exercise and therapy tool. It is fun once you get the hang of it and I hope it lasts a long time. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that I have no data on how long it will last and I do not yet have the personal experience to show me.

It's worth the effort
The best way that I can describe the technique to the gyro going is to grab it with both hands, (clasp it like a bowl of tea- can try interlocking your thumbs if it helps.) Then follow the arrow on the wheel; with both thumbs, role the the inside wheel in an upward motion. After only a few revolutions you will feel some tension from the springs. Release the wheel and proceed to gently spin it clockwise, (or counter clockwise, letting the wrist do all the work. Remember folks do not fight it; here, less is more. Please let the devise do most the work.... Some food for thought, do not feel that you need to wear out the device in order to get the most out of this product. A few minutes a day is all it takes....P.S. Please don't give up! This product can be mastered in a few minutes, a few hours, or a few days, however, if you keep at it, you will eventually get it; once you do, it will be hard to put down....

More of a workout than I thought it would be!
Let me start by saying, at first I couldn't figure out the motion to keep the gyroscope spinning, so I was initially very frustrated and considered returning it; however, I decided to keep working at it to see if I could figure it out.I play guitar and I was looking for something effective that could work the muscles in my wrists and forearms so I can get faster at picking. I'm glad I stuck it out until I figure it out and didn't return it, because this is one of the most intense arm workouts I've ever had short of weightlifting. After a minute or so when you first start using it, you can feel your muscles burning throughout your arms. I've been using it regularly since I bought it and I can feel my arms getting stronger and the product is holding up well, so it seems to be very well built. I would definitely recommend it!

Broke after light use
Purchased for non-dominant hand conditioning, strengthening & coordination for playing drums. Quality is fine for $15. Many are identical on Amazon with varying labels. Mine is out of balance & squeaks but is OK for $15. There are better ones which would be worth the increase if being used by PT's or long term use.UPDATE- It broke after light use. Would not recommend this one

Like learning how to ride a bike- but worth it!
Wow... took a minute ...looked up YouTube... “No your gyro ball is not broken...you will get this!”OMG! Yes! It starts out frustrating but then when you get that feel- just like they said...it will last a lifetime... starts off red and turns into a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors the faster you spin it... you will be fascinated and your arms will feel like a burn for sure... but then your addicted!I recommend wearing a chord or laminate holder to pop it between hands without dropping it!

Cures tendinitis? Don’t know, but it does help ALOT!
A co-worker showed me a similar item years back, he had mentioned that he used it as therapy for his hands (he was a mechanic, so he used his hands a lot). I bought it hoping that it was the same thing he showed me years back, and originally I thought it would be a nice gimmick to have and show the kids the power of a gyro. To my surprise goofing off with this, made my forearms sore. No big deal since it is considered an exercise machine. I kept on using it showing off to the kids and my tendinitis on my thumb is now gone. I have been struggling for months with tendinitis on my thumb that only seems to get better when I stop using it... Of course I need to use it so it keeps coming back. Now I use the ball like 3 mins every day to keep tendinitis away. I’m extremely happy with this find.
