Great reference from a very intelligent author
Book was in great shape, being new that's what's expected. Cover material and paperstock are a little on the thin side, but whatever that's fine with me.Book is a plethora of knowledge, even for those well versed in the subject. It maybe even better for those people, frankly, because they can really follow along. Great description of intakes, carb operation, and methods to improve performanceGood section on Holley Carbs, and a great section on Quadrajets. This book is an excellent compliment with Doug Roe and Cliff Ruggles quadrajet books, they really cover a lotIn love David Vizard's books. He doesn't just give a technicians perspective (which is highly valuable in its own right), he gives a proper engineers perspective as well gives data to prove that he's not just blowing smoke. He really knows his stuff and, unlike most engineers, writes well and conveys his point clearly and articulately

An older book, but still chock full of knowledge
We all have a lot to learn from Mr. Vizard. His first car had 25 hp. That was almost 60 years ago. He's done nothing but make power since.I really don't think there's a man on the planet with as much dyno and flow bench time as he has who is telling the world everything he has learned.Even if you don't live in V-8 musclecar land, there is still a lot to learn from his books. The top three I can recommend to any gearhead are, "How to Make Horsepower", his new head porting/flow bench book, and this one.

A great addition to Volume 1 and perfect stand alone reference.
Building horsepower reliably is and art and a science. You must understand the elements of creating it and how to apply it to your engine. This book will explain why some combinations of manifolds and carb work together and more importantly why some don't! Before you buy any carb to help you go faster, you need this book! Take my word for it, there is irreplaceable knowledge in this book! David Vizard writes to give us the benefit of his decades of engine building experience and I buy everything he writes! If there are 2 books on the same topic, Vizard gets the nod. Buy this book and put it in your engine library, you will be glad you did!

overview only
After all the hype and great reviews I bought vol 1 and 2 and I have to confess that I was very underwhelmed by them. David Vizard is unquestionably a master engine builder but these books (my first DV books) really didnt impress me very much. I need serious engine building info not simple overviews of a thousand things packed into the limited space of 100 plus pages. I have come to realize that all the engine tuning/building books I buy both locally and online are judged on whether or not they are as good as, better or rubbish compared to A. Graham Bell's Four stroke performance book. In this case my first David Vizard books qualify as "should not have bothered". In case anyone has read my other reviews and thinks that I have a bias toward Bell's book then let me say that I do and that since buying it only one other book out of dozens since has impressed me, It remains the champ as far as Im concerned

A+ for advanced learning!
For an advanced student, this book is great. It showed manifold design and improvement concepts, had lots of good info on Holley carburetors, and did a great job of showing how the intake manifold affected the carburetor's operation. It also talked about wave tuning, which is hard info to find. For a novice student, this book might be hard to follow, but that's the whole point of learning, right?
