an excellent book
This is an excellent and very thorough historical record of the Wagon Box Fight. The scholarship is impeccable, and the author's commitment to capturing a record of this important turning point in Red Cloud's War (the first Indian experience with breech loading rifles).

Epic story in a small book
Don't let the mildly comicbook cover, and the small size of this book fool you, this is a very well written, well detailed account of the Wagon Box fight and also touches enough on the Fetterman fight to relate it to the WBF of a year later. This book is a real eye opener, as to what a tiny bit of technology can do to turn the tide in full blown warfare, live and die situation! I highly recommend this book,I only wish I had the same content in a hardback copy of quality binding...the content is worth every penny of the cost. History in the pages!!

Interesting Footnote Battle
Anyone interested in the difficulties that faced the men who blazed the Bozeman Trail westward from Fort Kearney in the 19th century should enjoy the story of this little-known fight. It was actually a small affair, but was one of many attacks on the whites by the men of Red Cloud's detachment during the time that some of the Sioux were trying to live in peace with the whites while the whites were trying to keep the peace despite orders from the military to press ahead with the road against the terms of the treaty. It was a time of mutual uncertainty, and of course the Indians were brutal in their outrage at the white's duplicity. The only disappointment I felt was in the lack of personal detail about the Wagon Box fight itself, but it seems to have been a relatively minor fight at a time when much bigger engagements were taking place, and relatively little about it got recorded. Still, it is interesting to know about it.

Very nice read, I liked all the individual observations of witnesses. Great proof of the value of the weapons used. Custer wished he had them...

I learned a lot about the heroism of the soldiers and laborers who defended against an Indian attack.
