Yottamaster Aluminum External is Solid
Received this Yottamaster Thunderbolt 3 Aluminum External Enclosure on Monday. Received it in one day. After installing the SSD it worked on my M1 Mac Mini without any issues. It did get a little hot when transferring large files but then just stays Luke warm to the touch. I installed a 2TB NVMe m.2 M-Key SSD. Although it did not reach advertised Read/Write speeds it may be due to the M1. Waiting for the next update to see if speeds increase.

Solid enclosure, but it does get hot
Feels very solid. Great TB3 speeds too - with Sabrent Rocket I got consistently ~3000MB/s reads and 800MB/s. I'm willing to attribute slower erite speeds to the drive itself, as I got comparable specs with other TB3 enclosures for this drive. Why 4 stars? It does get hot, which is generally a good indication o the enclosure moving heat away from the drive, however in my test, the enclosure/drive repeatedly disconnected when hammered with ~300GBs of data. I suspect this is purely a function of heat, as other enclosures (such as with thicker metal shell or active cooling didn't have such issues)

WD SN550 does not fit into the enclosure. If you force it to assemble, it might break the SSD.
I've tried with two SSD, PNY and WD. The material and closure was very good. Tested speed was good too. However, it doesn't fit with WD SN550. The case can't be assembled. I tried to force to close the case and connected to my Mac, but the device was not even recognized by my Mac. If I open the case, Mac can recognize it. Inside of the enclosure, the copper layer is supposed to contact the SSD. However, it looks their mechanical team didn't survey enough the standard of SSD or the practice of the SSD design in the market. With PNY SSD, it was not bad, but I was still concerned about the pressure to the SSD by the case.

Research thunderbolt 3 well before buying
Overheats and becomes so hot it’s unusable. Also, the drive I was using stopped working. I had to return both in less than 48 hours.

Faster than internal Mac Mini SSD
Quickly ran out of storage on my Mac Mini with 256GB of storage, but didn't want to slow down my computer with a USB-C drive. This Thunderbolt 3 enclosure seemed like a good option and I picked up a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD to put inside, this drive is so fast that it saturates Thunderbolt 3, so when USB 4 comes out (which is essentially Thunderbolt 4) I can update it to a new enclosure. The combo is faster than my internal drive!Cons:- Completely petty and has no impact on the functionality but the text on the drive screams "Chinese made", I'm going to try taking a magic eraser to it and erasing it. However the cable and internal are legitimate.- It can get hot, but any drive of this size without fans will get hot. This thing is smaller than it looks in pictures.Overall, I think this combined with a Samsung drive is a better buy than any other Thunderbolt drive on Amazon or Apple's store. You can upgrade to Thunderbolt 4 in the future and you have a super portable and fast drive until then.

Not compatible with Samsung PM981a
I tried three ssds on MacOS Catalina, they are: Samsung PM981a 1TB, Samsung PM981a 512GB, Hp 256GBHp 256GB works perfectly without problem, but Samsung 1TB failed.First time I thought it would be a ssd failure, so I installed the drive to an desktop, everything works fine. Then I suspected it would be a compatibility issue, so I installed another Samsung PM981a drive on this thing and failed again. The symptoms are : memories got extremely hot (while hp remains calm and cool, one should note that samsung pm981a has much lower TDP than hp's), first I thought it was shortage, but not. If you try to erase the drive on MacOS with particular table type (MBR+exFAT), it randomly failed (sometime it managed to do that but failed to mount it). Even if you managed to mount the drive, it ejected itself time to time without any cause. If you run benchmarks on samsung drives, it fails immediately.Note none of those issues happen when I put a hp drive in.If it's just a single samsung's drive, I would be happy and replace a new one, but all my samsung pm981a drives have the same problem.

Fast transfer speeds and easy installation
This enclosure transfers data fast and is easy to install. The included cord is a good length and isn't too short. The enclosure isn't too thick and is easy to carry around with a laptop.

Don’t try to use more than one at a time
Easy to setup, but the hardware is made in a way that you cannot connect multiples of these to your system as thunderbolt. Mac or Linux would only recognize one at a time.
