Not Your Idol, Vol. 1 (1)

More than I expected.
I honestly started the read not fully understanding what story was about to be told but I knew I was intrigued by the premise of a former idol going into hiding and dealing with a traumatic past. What I got was 100 times better then what I expected. It was extremely uncomfortable reading through this volume, seeing how objectifying and victim-blaming some of the characters were. But the way, the very human way, everyone else around them was dealing with those very same issues, kept me glued to the story. It was nice to see that it wasn't one-sided and people were being called out. Sexual assault is a hard issue to cover but this first volume is handling it in a way that starts a conversation that really needs to be had.The artwork is amazing as well. Which helps with the storytelling. Most of the time that is what makes or breaks a good manga for me.Then that ending. I started out on the fence about whether or not this would be something I would invest myself in, but now, I need to know what will happen next. Maybe I can hold out of the next part, impatiently. This is for sure a story I need sitting in my personal library to recommend out to others.

psychological suspense manga indeed
Not your Idol was written by Aoi Makino. This manga is what I would call a "shojo" psychological suspense manga as it takes place in a world much like ours. The main character is that of Nina Kamiyama and we get to know her after she has quit been an idol. She was attacked by a fan during meet up and after that stopped being a girl if you will. So far volume one was very successful and left we wanting volume 2 like yesterday.

I like the art and I like the story so far. I also like the topic: a young girl survived an assault and we get to see how that has changed her. I'm interested to see her interact more with the other characters. I'd really like to know what's up with Miku. So far these two young women represent two sides of an ongoing issue so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. I will be waiting for the next volume.

A dark look into what it means to be a woman
This manga caught me off guard, originally. It's very focused on how women are viewed in Japan. Kamiyama is teased for not being as feminine after her PTSD. Female classmates are shamed for being scared of being touched inappropriately, objectified by their male counterparts, ect. The first volume is very heavy with the points of view where women are depicted in these helpless situations and how they deal with their trauma.I really like it for simply that reason. How human it felt, compared to most dramas. A must read, unless sexual harassment/assault triggers you at all.

Love this story
I really love this manga! How it speaks out about how whatever a women wears, does not mean you can touch them! Women wear what they want to wear for them, not you!! I can't wait for more volumes.

It’s not what you expect, an tackles a growing problem in Japan. It is serious, but also allows bitter sweet smiles

More than I bargained for.
I'll be honest I kinda cover-bought this, without much knowledge on the story other than it being about an Idol going into hiding. and boy am I happily surprised! It had me torn between not being able to put it down and having to remember to breathe so I don't pass out.

Really good setup.
A really good set up to a thriller. Left me wanting more...And, it even left me questioning the boy’s motives.Who is stalking the poor girl, who’s become withdrawn over an attack? And why is the boy really trying to get close to her?
