Hooray, I can still get a sulphur candle online ...
Hooray, I can still get a sulphur candle online. You can not get them in garden centres anymore because apparently people have made themselves ill by returning into a greenhouse after lighting the sulphur. Doh! Why would anyone do that? Shame we all have to be limited as a result of others unthinking actions.

Very difficult to light
I bought two of these as I have a large greenhouse and you are supposed to use them simultaneously. This proved impossible as they are so difficult to light. You get what just looks like a piece of paper buried in the tin which you have to roll into a wick and then push into the granules leaving about a cm which you then light. Well it took 3 attempts to get the first one to start emitting the smoke and the second one I never did get to work despite 6 or 7 attempts which just left a melted solid mass in the tin. So all in all a waste of money. If they provided a proper wick I am sure it would be fine as the first one did eventually give of a lot of smoke but probably not enough to properly fumigate my 10 x 12 greenhouse.

WELL DONE, WHOEVER STUCK BARCODE LABEL OVER INSTRUCTIONS!
NB - review is currently not for product and when product is used I will re-review. However, it arrived with a large sticky label attached to the tin, having the product name (exactly as produced on the front of the tin itself - "Battles Greenhouse Sulphur Candle 225g") and a barcode printed on it. A label that could have been stuck on the base of the tin, I thought, until I eventually got it off to discover it replaced a minuscule barcode beneath. Sadly, someone (at the product end, not Amazon, it later turned out) decided to print it overly-large and stick it over the area of the tin providing the instructions for use and safety warning. And it was not one of those easy-peel labels that just comes off, it was one of those labels that only peels off its surface layer and leaves a thin layer of paper and adhesive stuck on the tin. Scraping and a little solvent worked ok, but it may not always. I contacted Battles by email to advise them re this problem and, very impressively, within an hour I had a set of emailed instructions/safety warnings in my inbox, and now they are aware of the problem let's hope it is fixed. Anyone with similar issue can email to the contact address on their website and instructions will be sent, I'm sure. Once it warms up a little and I can clear the greenhouse of plants, I'll set it off and observe the results.

sulphur candle
sulphur candle given it 3 stars at present as I'll have to wait until later in the season to see if it has cured the powdery mildew problem that I've had for the past two years. I hope so because it's very disheartening to lose good healthy plants to mildew half way through the season. The instructions could have been a lot clearer as you don't get a "wick" as such just a piece of paper but it does seem to work with a burn time of about two hours. Agree with another reviewer in that some complete idiot stuck the barcode over half the instructions. With modern supermarkets totally ruining salad vegetables the only way to taste tomatoes cucumbers etc is going to be grow your own for the future so hopefully this stuff is going to work.

Used two cans in my 12 foot by 8 foot ...
Used two cans in my 12 foot by 8 foot greenhouse to be on the safe side as no volume or dimensions are mentioned. One candle should be enough for a 6 by 8. Used in Autumn and will be doing the same in spring.

Hopefully very effective
Used this product for the first time. Unlike other reviewers I didn't have any problem with lighting the 'candle' and the greenhouse soon filled with fumes. Do read the instructions though. To make it easier to light I raised the tin off the ground by placing it on a kneeling stool. I should have placed a tile or brick under the tin as the heat generating melted a neat hole into the plastic! Will know next time.

Excellent product to clean the greenhouse.
I have used sulphur candles before, and have always found they make an excellent job of killing moss between glass, also rid the greenhouse of any other unwanted bugs aphids etc. They some times take a bit of lighting, but today it did light and burned very slowly at first, I left it and about 10 minutes later I noticed the greenhouse was filling with smoke, so I was pleased it was doing it's job. Also I used matches to light it.

Exacly what it says on the tin
The candles I ordered were lost in the post - NOT the fault of the supplier! I let the supplier know and a second order was dispatched immediately, arriving the following day.Used the candles for my greenhouse - easy to use. Seem to have worked perfectly. Job done. Well pleased
