Vera Series 1 - 10 [DVD] [2020]

One of the good things to come out of the 2020 lockdown for me was viewing this excellent drama series for the first time,and then becoming seriously addicted to it to the point that I hungered for any episodes airing on any channels.So it's goodbye Midsomer Murders which was my former crime fave, I'm afraid your chocolate box villages and extravagant murders don't do it for me anymore I'm afraid,my allegiance is now with Vera Stanhope and her magnificent band of fellow detectives as they try to solve dastardly crimes and murders in the majestic North East England.Speaking of which, I don't know who the director of photography/ camera operators are but the stunning picturesque landscapes and breathtaking views captured are oscar winning stuff and wouldn't look out of place in a Hollywood cinematic movie.And of course there is the star of the show - Brenda Blethyn - well what can I say, this lady is a fantastic actress( why isn't she a Dame?, hopefully that will be rectified soon).She is a delight to watch, irascible, methodical and times a mischievous twinkle of sarcasm and that delightful little chuckle she gives.She is such a force of nature in those briefing room scenes with her abrupt questioning to her team that even I get a tad intimidated by her, proof that she really is a consumate actress.I finally decided to part with my money to purchase this DVD boxset, for the simple reason that I was getting withdrawal symptoms, repeats and even new episodes are few and far between.And it's money we'll spent and I can watch episodes multiple times and never,ever, get bored.

The complete series 1 - 10. Two episodes on each DVD. 40 episodes overall. Excellent story lines, my wife and I are still only part way through the set and enjoying every minute.

When I first watched Series 1 of Vera, I was astonished at Vera's character... but I grew to love her in Series 2. She's funny, compassionate, unpredictable, and utterly brilliant. I have to admit, my favourite DS is David Leon's Joe Ashworth... I'm not too impressed with Kenny Doughty. I also find Northumberland gorgeous-- so happy it's being showcased as well as the actors. The show isn't gory or too dark (like Marcella), which is a relief as I prefer better acting skills than gore. Another thing I like is there is hardly any foul language/swearing and I don't think there's any sex or nudity scenes. I think Brenda Blethyn is a fantastic actress and it seems as though Vera was made for her. I loved the show so much, I even bought the Ann Cleeves books. I wholly recommend this show!!Helpful Hint: I've seen a few reviews about people buying from Amazon UK not realising the dvds won't play in Region 1 players. Or maybe from a different region than the one you're expecting. Maybe I can help. I live in Canada and I buy all my dvds for Region 2 and they play perfectly well in my PC's dvd drive and I use the programme VLC to watch the show. VLC is region-free. I prefer to buy UK shows from the UK for the proper English subtitles. So if you find the dvd you purchased doesn't play in your dvd player, put it in your PC's optical drive, view it using VLC, and watch it from your PC or connect the PC to the TV. :)

Unfortunately, did not spot that this version is in NTSC (whatever that stands for) & NOT the usual (for the UK), PAL system; not a great problem in that the discs can still be viewed on our DVD player, but ONLY after having to go through the performance of changing things in the settings menu before (obviously) watching it & then to return the settings to how they were before to watch "regular/PAL" DVDs which make up the vast majority of our somewhat eclectic collection. Vera - good - Discs - naughty (& probably do not Prolong Active Life...).

A fantastic series. I had wanted to buy this for quite a while and when I had quite a bit of money accumulated in gift vouchers I decided to buy it. I had only heard about the series, as I live in Greece, and never seen any episodes. My partner and I are thoroughly enjoying watching it and even though we have 10 series to get through, we haven't tired of it and will be sorry when we have seen all the episodes.

Good for Vera fans. Was tricky getting the discs out of the box and unfortunately one of them snapped. Not been able to find a replacement. But other than that good. Just be cautious when getting the discs out of the box.
