Room-filling rears
I've been a home theater hobbyist for a decade or so. I've run dozens of different pairs of rear speakers trying to recreate a real movie theater experience where you might have 10-20 speakers running all up the sides and across the rear of the room. I've had plenty of setups that were fun, but never really been satisfied. Even running two sets of rears in a 7.1 feels kind of like a lame reproduction of the real thing.I recently had to switch my main system over to a much more wife-friendly format (in-walls + soundbar instead of towers + bookshelves). The room is very large (18'x24') and one pair of these speakers are absolutely filling it out with the best rear-image I've ever had. I have them mounted up high directly to the sides of my main listening position and switched to dipole mode; if you closed your eyes and listened you would swear there's a dozen of them around the room. I'm absolutely floored.I'm getting great atmospheric effects during quiet scenes and great panning effects during action scenes. At the risk of sounding like a reviewer in a magazine, I'd say there's a subtlety and finesse to the way these produce a rear image. Instead of beating you over the head with bullet-whizzes that make you look over your shoulder at the speaker they just sort of take you into the scene. It's really immersive and something I have never really experienced before. If I were going to do it again I think I would have spent the extra money and gone with the larger SR30 model for the extra bass output. I got used to using big bookshelves for my rears and miss running closer to full-range on the rear channels. There isn't many scenes where bass in the rear channels is a big plus, but it's cool when it happens. If I could have the incredible image of these speakers and a little more bass I don't think I could possibly want to change anything.
