A great American tale
Though this is a children's book, geared for ages four to eight years old, the format is such that it will appeal to any age group. Book is written and illustrated beautifully to encapsulate the joys, hardships, and concerns for nature and animals of 7 year old Abe Lincoln, growing up in pristine Kentucky, around 1816. As the title of the book hints at, the story reveals ultimately how one act of kindness, is repaid, and how a close-knit caring wilderness community can unite. This is a story that I had never heard before. The maps included in the illustrations, and the historical timeline at the end of the book are great and has sparked in me, an adult, a new interest in wanting to learn more about Abe Lincoln's life. I hope to soon visit the historic park and area where Abe was born and grew up. Thanks for such a great book, and I highly recommend it for everyone.

Wonderful gift for children (and even adults)
I heard about this book and bought it thinking I would give it to a child, but ended up keeping it and buying more copies for several kids. The story (true) about Abraham Lincoln adds another interesting chapter to understanding his life...You wonder if the dog hadn't rescued Little Abe, what our country would be like. Beautiful writing and illustrations. Highly recommend.

The book is a delightful account of Abe Lincoln's life as a young boy with his dog, Honey. My great granddaughters love it, and so do I! In fact, all four generations love it!I think every reader will enjoy reading the special timeline (at the end of the book) re Abe's connection to animals throughout his life. This is a book for the ages, one to be treasured, read and enjoyed over and over again!!Grannie Annie (GG)

Wonderful true story about one of our most beloved Presidents
What a wonderful book!! We all know Abe Lincoln from his Presidency, but I had no idea he was so compassionate to animals. Abe finds Honey, who has a broken leg. Abe mends it and they become lifelong friends. Then Honey saves Abe when Abe gets trapped in a cavern. The best part is that it's a true story. My daughter loved getting insight into Abe as a child, and the notes and timeline at the end of the book are really interesting. Most of all, this is just a lovely story about a boy and his dog. The illustrations are gentle and beautifully done. This book is destined to become a classic.

A peek at a president's early days
I’ve never read a book about Abraham Lincoln’s early days until now. This is the perfect book for children to get acquainted with the sixteenth president of the U.S.—as someone who was once a child like them. The lyrical text coupled with the whimsical illustrations make this book a delight for children and adults. You can’t help loving adventurous Abe and Honey—a great dog companion. This book is perfect for schools, because it has so many topics to discuss (presidents, nineteenth-century mills, animals, Kentucky, spelunking, kindness). A marvelous debut. I can’t wait to see what else Shari Swanson produces.

Great book
Beautifully written and illustrated story of a boy and his dog, but in this case the boy is Abraham Lincoln. So, the dog saving this boy also indirectly saved a nation. A gem of a story based on true events.
