illustrations are... different
I bought this as a Christmas present for my 2.5 year old nephew who is interested in all things mechanical. I thought it would be a good companion to the "Amazing Machines" series of books I got him for his birthday. While I like the book and its explanations, a lot of the illustrations are kind of terrifying (dolls, for instance). We have to skip over that page. If your child doesn't mind somewhat creepy illustrations, and has a lust for learning about the world around hir, then this is a great book. If your child things things like Peppa Pig are scary, this is not the book for you.

Filling A Great Need
As an educator and a dad, I'd been looking for a picture book about engineering for a long time. I wasn't interested in DK and photo books for older kids, but wanted something for ages 4-8. In this book I was excited to find finally what I was looking for! Kudos to the author and I can only hope that others think about publishing new titles with a similar theme. We need to get young kids familiar with engineering and technology at an early age to keep their interest and understanding through adulthood. This is especially important for young girls and other special populations that don't normally accustom themselves to engineering concepts, which are quite different from science.

Great starting off point
This book really got 1st and 2nd graders thinking about what engineers do. It was a great book for a discussion point, or a starting point to introduce engineering in the curriculum. A 1st grader told me that he "really enjoyed that book today" It is important for young children to think about what engineers do and that it is a possible career option for them! Thank you so much! It was great!

Too detailed for smaller children
I bought this book for use at a presentation for first grade and I think it way over their heads. I am an electrical engineer and I wanted a book to explain what I do without asking 1st graders how many volts a computer needs or when was the first video game invented. It is probably a great book for about 4th grade.

For many ages
I think the Basics with the colors and pictures really captured my daughters attention, and with the more detailed information I look forward to her discovering more about simple things in life we don't think about, at an earlier age than I thought about. Thanks for such a universal and informative book.

For my engineer huband and wanna-be-engineer son
My four year old swears he will be an engineer like Daddy, so this was a perfect Father's Day gift for them both. Well written and with a good age-appropriate explanation of what engineers can do!
