Tasty Lunches
This made Bento preparations easier to understand. The sauces are amazing. The recipes were clear and easy to understand using easily accessible ingredients.

Easy to follow
As long as you are good for portion control you will do fine. Easy to follow mostly step by step. Too bad I'm going to go with a low carb moderate protein no sugar and high sat. Fat diet, oh well. I can still have rice once in a while.

Good book for someone wishing to try out bento lunches
Has a good mix of the “idea” of bento lunches and actual recipes. Also has a good mix of recipes including western friendly Japanese foods, actual western style bento lunches and some fusion and Chinese dishes as well.I think some people make the mistake of believing bento is an Asian philosophy that is very complicated and needs study to understand fully. It’s not. It’s busy women doing their best to provide their child with a nutritional lunch during school. You can use leftovers from last night’s dinner. You can use Mexican foods if you prefer. In fact many Mexican foods seem almost designed for bento. Whatever you serve at you table is going to make. Great bento lunch for your child. And a good quality bento box will hold more than enough food to keep your youngster from going hungry. They look small, but as I have personally found, you can pack a lot of food in those small boxes.

It is an okay book
The book is packed with recipes. However they're not staple recipes most would eat. Using ketchup as a "sauce" isn't MY jam. I was hoping for more recipes that are healthy and meals that are applicable . There's also no pictures.

Print is small. Recipes are good.
I liked the recipes in general. I found it frustrating that some of the ingrediants could not be obtained in a regular grocery store. I ended up ordering them from Amazon and had little control over size of product ordered. It was fairly expensive to obtain these articles in this manner as I ended up with way more of some items than I needed.

Possibly worth it for a few recipes?
I know it said beginners but I was very disappointed with the plain Ingredient, salt and pepper recipes and the sandwich recipes. Who doesn’t know how to salt and pepper to taste or put a sandwich together? Every growing child can make a sandwich and learns salt and pepper. Those recipes made me feel like I wasted money, but there are a few recipes that seem worth while. I did enjoy the little pieces of history they included with some of the dishes. But did wish it included more pictures of what the final dish looked like, I feel like there were only a handful of pics for the whole book.

No pictures!

Really easy to follow
I have just tried cooking from this book, in the UK, for the first time and I am delighted! The recipes are really easy to follow and rthe results are delicious! I will never use shop bought teriyaki sauce again! The book would be worth it for that! But everything is explained in simple steps with alternatives provided. I am definitely going to have to visit the closest Asian supermarket though as some of the ingredients are too expensive or difficult to get in Tesco - thank heavens for Amazon 😂! If you are interested in trying healthy food that is quick to organise in the morning (most of it is prepped in the evening or, in some cases at the start of the week) this is the book for you, even if you are not a skilled cook!

Great recipes but not perfect for beginners
I wouldn't recommend "Bento for Beginners" for real beginners. It has great recipes from all around the world and I absolutely love the fushion chapter, which is a great idea. But when you start with creating your first own Bentos, what really does help you, are pictures of different boxes and the book lacks of those. There are better books for beginners out there. But when you own one or two of those Bento books, this one is a great addition with tasty new recipes.
