The Best in new Jazz Alto Books
A new frontier in alto sax music.....blowing a new wind...Great to mix up with jazz riffs---like Don Cherry did on the trumpet..East and West...structured but also very free form...Sounds wonderful with a mic and delay... Expand your alto sax horizons...

Great book to play Carnatic/Indian Classical Music on Saxophone
We bought this for our son as he was trying to experiment Carnatic on his saxophone. He was able to use this book and played Carnatic music without a hitch. This book helped him to self-teach Carnatic notes based on the knowledge (western) he got from his school. I recommend this to any Sax player wanting to play Indian classical music.

Decent overview, but it doesn't seem quite to fit the bill
Too many assumptions about the playing level. It is both too simple and too difficult with some of the notations left unexplained. Still, the best thing I've seen to date on translating Indian music to someone versed in the western tradition.

Background and musical theory as well as tunes to play
This music book provides amazing value and quality by providing a thorough introduction into traditional Indian music. The book contains background information including historical as well as musical and this takes up about a third of the book. It provides relevant definitions and terminology such as Raga (melody) and Tala (rhythm) and explains how Indian music is taught. The music includes lessons and practice material equivalent to exercises such as scales and arpeggios. It also includes tunes and songs and all music has Western notation, as well as Indian notation. Rhythms are explained in the form of counting patterns such as 4 + 2 + 4 + 4.The book includes a CD which is invaluable for getting the right "sound."Whilst I found the music to be relatively easy to play, getting the authentic sound is challenging and this is where the CD is particularly instructive. Unfortunately, there were no play-along tunes on the CD, but you can play over the solo.I think that this is a fantastic product for anyone interested in Indian music, and would be useful even if you didn't play the alto saxophone

Enjoyable, well worth exploring.
Now this is rather different and takes some re-calibration on the ear :-) Don't underestimate the value of the early exercises, its not just the scales its the inflections and grace notes that really add the flavour. Obviously the book is wrote in such a way that Western musicians can get a basic grasp of some of the fundamental techniques in Indian music & styles but the tunes as you navigate through them require some inventive interpretation, dexterity and also some improvisation although that is hindered by the fact Candida Connolly did not include tracks minus sax so effectively you play along with her which is also rather educative as you hear a good stylistic approach in her performance. Almost haunting tone at times. Enjoyable, well worth exploring.
