Close Your Mouth: Buteyko Clinic Handbook for Perfect Health

Life Changing
I have an infuriating problem with nasal congestion, dry mouth and horseness. I have seen 2 ENTs, an allergist, tried every kind of medication including prescription medication (both oral and nose drops), had a sleep study and tried a C-pap in an effort to find a remedy. Another book i was reading made reference to Dr. Buteyko and I did some research and decided to buy this book. The theory behind this approach is fascinating and makes a lot of sense. This book explains the theory and provided exercises to improve the quality of breathing. It was really designed for use by people with asthma. I have no idea what kind of success those people have. But I have experienced a great improvement in my breathing as a result of doing the exercises. I usually do the exercises religiously and have gotten great relief from my nasal congestion. If I miss doing the exercises, I can tell immediately. If I have difficulty with congestion, doing some of the exercises helps right away. The exercises are simple to do, but also difficult because they involve decreasing your breathing. This feels uncomfortable and even scary at first, but with practice they become easy to do and provide a great deal of comfort. I now look forward to these exercises and sometimes substitute them for my meditation program, they are so relaxing. The book came with adhesive strips which I wear to bed to prevent mouth breathing during the night. This has worked wonders for improving my sleep. I no longer have dry mouth or gum problems, less snoring and according to my FItbit, the overall quality of my sleep has improved from "Fair" to "Good. This book, along with the strips has changed my life for the better. If you buy this book and have difficulty with doing the exercises, I urge you to keep trying until you get the hang of it. It's worth it. (I sent information on this book to my doctors. If they don't know about this - they should)

Improve Your Health and Life
Having done in-depth research in the field of alternative healing for over 40 years, I must say Patrick McKeown's work and genuine care for people is incredibly impressive. After researching on the internet, I borrowed and read his book "THE OXYGEN ADVANTAGE". It gave more detailed information about the Buteyko Breathing and the science behind it, and especially how it can improve athletic performance. Thankfully it also gave me what I needed to correct an error that I had picked up in my research when I first started doing the Buteyko exercises. It is an extraordinary book. Since I already knew Buteyko was probably one of "thee" most important things that could be done for a person's health, I needed a book that didn't have so much of the science and explanations, and cost less. This "CLOSE YOUR MOUTH" book fulfilled that need. It is concise yet gives the most important information and exercises, as well as the cautions of which exercises to do regarding certain health challenges. If I had started with these two books, I could have saved myself a lot of time and unnecessary difficulties. These books have helped me to make great progress. As soon as I get into better condition and can be athletic, I would also like to purchase "THE OXYGEN ADVANTAGE" book for myself. I think it is extraordinarily remarkable that Patrick McKeown actually takes the time to email, answer inquiries, and help people. It's rare to find anyone who puts the needs of others before the "almighty dollar". Also, if I had realized I could have purchased this book, the DVD, and the CD as a package deal on Amazon for just $10 more, that's what I would have done. I truly feel this breathing method improves a person's health and helps prevent serious and chronic disease. "To your health" __ buy the books.

A very helpful book!
This book is a real eye opener. I have been breathing incorrectly most of my life. I also have asthma and allergies. My over breathing is responsible for my heart going into afib. This book has helped me tremendously. I havenโt had asthma trouble for a while now. And using these breathing techniques in the book have helped me get to sleep much faster. Learning to breathe differently than you have been requires hard work. This is not a quick fix, but if you are willing to retrain your breathing, it can make a big difference. The book also has links to videos for additional help! I highly recommend this book and I wish it was required reading for all doctors because most of the doctors I have seen donโt understand the concept and relationship between oxygen and carbon dioxide!

We lost the art of breathing .....
Funny my new dentist had a similar book, Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life (1870), in his office. I read both books and I would highly recommend Close Your Mouth because of the exercises in it. However, this book could use a good editor to make it flow better. I got the feeling that people did not always breathe through their mouths. So what happened to cause this change? Anyways, I made a determination to keep my mouth shut while sleeping and I stopped my snoring pretty much. I do have more energy when I wake up. Plus when I walk my dog I do the step exercise (hold my breath up to 40+ steps). You don't have to have asthma to benefit from this book. Parents with newborns - gently close your baby's mouth if it's open.

Seems to be helpful
I don't know all the theories behind this, and probably don't have to. Using paper tape while I sleep has been a good practice. I use a piece cut a wee bit longer than the tape is wide, and it does not go all the way to the corners of my mouth. It works for me, gives a good seal, but with an escape hatch in case I sneeze or something. I think it's safer that way. My mouth stays more rested, not opening and then closing, and I think it decreases tooth grinding as well. Amazon has a multi pack of paper tape, cheap.

Life changer!
This book should be in every GP surgery, in every respiratory physiotherapy clinic and read by every health professional. Why don't healthcare professionals know about this???? The technique is so effective and could be helping thousands of sufferers and literally transforming their daily lives, I feel a social responsibility to spread the word as much as possible. I have suffered with chronic hyperventilation and breathing pattern disorder for three years, to the extent that I just looked forward to going to bed to get some respite from scary, uncomfortable and exhausting breathing. I would feel like I could not get enough air into my body day in day out...within 2 days of reading this book and implementing the really simple techniques I felt like I could breathe again, and three weeks in, my health and quality of life have been completely transformed. I cannot thank the author enough for writing this book and sharing this wonderful, effective and powerful approach to breathing. It has given me my life back. If you are suffering, like I was, buy it, you will not regret it!

Instant results: Goodbye Nasal Congestion
This is the first review I've ever written for a book on Amazon, and I've read a lot of books so that's saying something. I have suffered from nasal congestion for as long as I can remember. I transformed my diet, took my exercise seriously but still, I suffered a daily blocked nose and chronic congestion. A quick visit to the GP left me no closer to finding a sustainable solution and I predicted the end result would be the prescription of a steroid spray something I wanted to avoid. The exercises outlined in this book have provided me already with instant relief and the ability to breathe through my nose clearly without the use of any medicinal sprays. Every now and again you come across a book that you truly can't put a price on. This book is one of them. Absolute Gold.

I can now breath and smell
I've had rhinitis for the past 20 years and asthma for over 30 years, 10 years ago I completely lost my sense of smell. Last week I couldn't walk without stopping to gasp for air every few minutes. I've only had the book for 4 days and already it's made a massive difference to my breathing and this morning I can smell for the first time in 10 years. OMG this book is worth it's weight in gold.. Thanks so very much.

A Breakthrough for bad breathers
I had to write this review because I have searched for years for a cure for my bad breathing, constantly needing to take a huge breath, sighing, yawning and generally feeling starved for air...and I have found it! This book is the answer to my prayers, it is easy to read, easy to follow and after just a couple of days of practising the breathing exercises I am getting some relief from this awful condition. I do not have asthma,I have chronic hyperventilation syndrome, and after reading the reviews of other sufferers of hyperventilation syndrome I gave it a go...and am I glad I did! The exercises are easy but slightly uncomfortable to begin with due to the feeling of being 'air hungry', but this is normal and it gets easier and less uncomfortable. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having breathing problems due to bad breathing habiys, stress or anxiety induced 'over breathing'. I have now ordered the DVD so I can complete my reversal of this horrible habit I have formed. If you too have struggled with this condition buy this book.
