Reliable performance at a good price
I've had extremely good results with the Fantom external drives over the years. I have three models, each about 3 years apart in age. In my home, one servers as a network file server, another performs daily automated backups of every wireless device in my home, and the third functions as a DVR storage device. They just keep running and running year after year and I barely need to check on them - but when I do, they are running just fine. I find the Fantom drives to be highly reliable, sleek in design, and priced very fairly given how well I feel they work for me. If I have one gripe ...it's that darn blue LED on the front of each one, so bright I could signal ships at sea from home. A small piece of black electrical tape tend to mute this fairly well.Highly recommended.

Spectrum Charter DVR Expander
Great for expanding the space on my Spectrum DVR. While I did get bother a 2TB & a 6TB, it seems that theexpansion is not "linear". On the 6TB it seems that 50% of space will take about 140 movies....but I guess I mayfind out when/if I get to over 300 or so.In any case, despite researching on the web, it was unclear if this would work with my particular DVR. Charterwas essentially useless with both info. on the existing DVR HD space, nor if it I was likely to get a higher capacity onat the Charter store.Since they have a virtual monopoly in my area, what do they care.In any case, this HD did work out quite well. You must unplug your DVR totally & allow a full reboot. Please make sure you agree to format the drive if it asks...because itwill not ask again.I needed to reformat each one back to FAT to re-trigger the choice to format. It may worn you that you can loss the existingmovies on the embedded HD...and you will. For some reason, it is unclear at best, if once you use this external drive, does it use the internal one for storage. It does notseem that way....but it appears that they system still uses whatever OS that is on the HD.Sadly, you cannot swap between two external HD's. You have to commit to one. Of course, if you have two, you do have onethat you know will work for new movie storage in the future. As others have stated, the external HD is active & makes some noise during operation. It is not loud at all & you can put a piece oftape over the blinking blue LED light if it bothers you. I have no problem with either & I am still glad that it is working quite well.It does seem that the eSATA interface works quite well with this old DVR...possibly better than the internal one. While the metalhousing can get slight warm.... it seems to cool the drive well. I will see in the summer if any problems happen when it gets to the90's indoors.Since trying to upgrade with crappy Charter was a total bust, it was a joy that this FD HD worked out so well. While it does seem a bit silly to upgrade this via eSATA, it seems that crappy Charter will be more fixed at switching toan expensive cloud storage in the future...so I choose to this upgrade path.Since it is the same stupid OS, you still can only save two shows at the same time.I hope that the external drive may take some of the load off the internal drive & prolong the lifeof this DVR...since I dread dealing with Charter more than necessary. For those interested, this drive also appears to work well with an iMac & will work as a sturdyTime Machine drive....but not via eSATA. The USB works fine.

2nd 12TB in a row not working on Windows 7
Got this 12TB Fantom drive Aug 26, 2018. Dell Precision 7910 Windows 7 would not recognize it through disk management, could not find the device, USB hub did not light up as being connected, still did not work on USB 3.0 in front of Dell Precision work station.Device manager does not show anything connected to that USB port. Device manager and disk management both show the 3 internal drives and the other 10 external Fantom drives (3TB to 6TB). Blue drive light comes on, can hear disk boot up and run. I tried cable swap, no help.Amazon offered support help, I declined since I have almost 40 years of computer experience.Returned drive to Amazon, exchanged for same 12TB drive, exact same problem. No offer of support help. I contacted Amazon customer support, no response.--------------------------------BIG Update: Manufacturer contacted me, the next day!!!. Had me try: Turn on drive without USB connected, wait until drive boots (20 seconds ish), then connect USB. First two tries: No Joy. Third try: I waited longer, drive light went out, connected USB, Windows found drive. So manufacturer google drive to update the firmware. Came with great instructions. Worked fine, although know that said 12TB Fantom needs to be the only drive connected while doing the firmware update. After update, turned on drive and all went well as normal.Note: I have 10 other Fantom drives, the oldest is perhaps 8 years old. They are on for 99% of the 24/7/365. Not one has ever failed on its own. These drives have the best cooling apparatus.Yeah, it is true that they should have tested better and not sold one that wouldn't work perfect, but the fix was easy and support was spectacular. My guess is all future drives will have this issue sorted out.

Warranty not fulfilled - DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM FANTOM!
This drive failed less than a year after purchase. I wrote to Fantom and they responded that they needed to see the invoice for my purchase. I sent the invoice to them early in September 2022 - today is November 14th, 2022 and they still haven't written back to me.THIS COMPANY'S WARRANTY IS NOT WORTH THE PAPER IT WRITTEN ON - DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM FANTOM!

Lasted for less than a year.
In fact, I've purchased 3 of these. I returned the first one because the power cable didn't fit the drive. The second one worked as advertised. I eventually bought a 3rd one, but like the 1st one, the power cable did not fit the drive. • I was happy with the drive itself...for a year. Then I started getting unrepairable errors. (Disk Utility doesn't supply a lot of information unfortunately). When it was working properly, I was very happy with it. I don't know how prevalent these disk errors are, but it looks like you pay your money and take your chances.

NO UK PLUG THEREFORE ILLEGAL TO SELL IN ENGLAND
NO UK PLUG THEREFORE ILLEGALTO SELL IN ENGLAND.There appears no way, on my orders page, to request the missing part. The only option available is to return the item after waiting just over a week for delivery from US.The ridiculous point is that the power adapter has slide in prongs for international use but only the U.S. item is provided.Very disappointed and unhappy.
