Particle Physics for Non-Physicists: A Tour of the Microcosmos

Far Exceeded My (Somewhat Low) Expectations
I've always been frustrated that TTC avoids math in its science courses, particularly its physics courses where math is even more vital. In fact, it could be argued that even TTC's math courses avoid real math! This limits the TTC science and math courses to staying at a "popular" level rather than a true university level, whereas most of the TTC's courses in other subjects (eg, humanities) are indeed at a university level. So I came to this course with somewhat low expectations, but I purchased it anyway because of my strong interest in physics, especially theoretical physics. The result was that I was very pleasantly surprised! Despite the limitation of almost entirely avoiding math, Pollack manages to cover the subject in quite a bit of depth, and his historical approach works very well. He also adds sophistication to the course by incorporating much insightful discussion about the philosophical dimensions of the physics. In short, Pollack has pretty much done the best job possible of presenting this subject without math, and the result is quite good indeed! I gained a lot from the course, despite already having some background in this subject.Highly recommend for anyone interested in science, especially physics, with the possible exception of those who already know this subject at an advanced level.
