Lonely Planet Bulgarian Phrasebook & Dictionary

Pocket sized and easy to use.This was a really helpful book for my short 9-day trip to Bulgaria, but it's written for a stay of a few months. I left it behind in the country with a friend who will be there longer. Most of the words and phrases I needed were here, and the book layout was thought through.LP spends a whole chapter up front describing the alphabet and phrase building, which is interesting, but just marginally helpful for a short trip. From that perspective it would been handy to have a more lengthy lexicon of phrases up front to get around on the fly.The pronunciation guides were good and easy to follow. My suggestion would be to dedicate an entire quick reference section up front for the most needed phrases and words.

Indispensable. The only downside: some Bulgarian fonts completely change the letters, so if this book had the 'written fonts included, which you see everywhere in signs, packaging, and restaurants, it would be extremely helpful.

Good reference - probably would have been easier to have one index instead of 'Food' separate - had to figure out where to look - couldn't find lots of words but didn't expect small book to have everything! Pictures of signs would have been nice - crylillic alphabet on signs looked different than in book - but overall good investment - used it a lot & almost learned alphabet.

Same as other reviewers, it's hard to find what you are looking for. Thankfully, SO many people in Bulgaria speak English! Even the ones who don't know enough to get by! What a treat! I didn't have to pull out the book once! :)

I used a few of the phrases out of the book, it was useful

It has decent phrases for a beginner or random visitor to the country.

I used this book on a trip to Bulgaria about 6 months ago and since then have been trying to learn Bulgarian. It is such a detailed and useful book that I am still using it to help me with grammar and vocabulary. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone at all interested in learning Bulgarian. The phonetic pronunciation for each translation is excellent and my Bulgarian boyfriend could understand me perfectly when using it, even with no prior knowledge.

I've reviewed hundreds of books in a professional capacity, but not much I can say about this one. It is well laid-out. covers all the things you want or need to know in appropriate sections, and s small enough to stow in your pocket. It irritated me at first to see how they had written the phrase or question in Cyrillic form next to the English version and before the phoenetic guide, then I realised it was not for me in case I wanted to copy it. It was of curse for any hapless Bulgar who I had accosted. Duhhh.Well worth the money, especially when you think how foreign a country Bulgaria is in terms of alphabet!PS. Incredibly useful phrase book for touring Bulgaria for a few days or a few weeks. Accompanying a translator app on a mobile phone it was a great addition to the travelling. The local language in Bulgaria is not in the Roman alphabet so any aids are very useful.

It looks well organised. From the parts I skimmed it has good translatation of the phrases in both lagges and pronunciation guides. Very good product.

Book arrived in good time and is an excellent guide to have when in country. Would have preferred the Rough Guide, as the layout is easier to navigate, but the Lonley Planet is okay. It stood us well when in bulgaria.
