The Moody Handbook of Theology

Clearly one of the standards for undergird good, solid Bible study!
As a former seminarian who sat under Dr. Enns' teaching I have found The Moody Handbook of Theology (both the original and the revised editions) to be just that key resource to turn to again and again! I highly recommend it to be in every pastor's and lay Bible teacher's library. Dr. Enns' book is a great gift to the Lord's church and I personally benefited much from Dr. Enns' influence on my life and ministry.

None better!
If you want a single inexpensive volume of the various doctrinal beliefs on most of the theological doctrines (Protestant-based, though not entirely), this is a great buy and very readable.

Solid and thorough
For the conservative Christian this is a solid work articulating the basics and deeper subjects of theology. I particularly like how they also state contrary theological views without being demeaning. This is on my short list of must have's.

An Introduction to Theology
The little handbook of theology that I used in my college studies often returns to my hand as a reference tool today. Enns' fascinating little work introduces the student to the various approaches to theology. The volume is divided into five sections. The writer first presents a biblical theology which moves through the Bible section by section, demonstrating the progressive nature of revelation on various points of theology along the way. Next, Enns moves to systematic theology. In this section, the reader will find the classic doctrines discussed in light detail. The third section is the discussion of the historical theology of the church. Enns traces the development of theology from ancient, to medieval, to reformation, to the modern church. Section four discusses various branches of dogmatic theology such as Calvinism, Arminianism, Covenant Theology, Dispensationalism, and Catholicism. The last section deals with contemporary theology and lays out the beliefs of various strands of Christians today. Enns deals here with the Liberals, the Neo-Orthodox, Radical Theologies, Historicist Ideologies, Socialist Theology, Catholic Theology, and Conservative Theology. This excellent work will provide the average reader with an introduction to the major fields of theology today and will serve as a valuable reference tool for years to come.

Many EXTRAS not found in most theologies.
POSITIVES: Thank you Enns and Moody for the ultimate concise evangelical book of sound doctrine! I own all three editions. The expanded 2014 edition is one of my most used Bible reference works. He covers every kind of theology and has many helpful charts. Multiple viewpoints are fairly presented with supporting Scriptures. "Best of the best" book recommendations for further research included at the end of each chapter. Indispensable theological glossary and indexes for people, topics and Scriptures. The ebook version may include the Moody Bible Commentary on Romans.TOPICS: Enns covers many controversial and apologetic ideas about the Bible. Interesting topics include divorce and remarriage for elders, lordship salvation, King James only movement, replacement theology, the nephilim (Gen. 6) and the pre-wrath rapture theory.NEGATIVES: Print ink is too light, much darker on first edition. Indexes are incomplete, some names from book missing. Enns seems to be going easy on the emergent church movement. Where are the damning quotes? Like "Brian McLaren Calls Hell and the Cross "False Advertising for God""!

Like Having 5 Books in One!
This book is a great resource if you are looking or consice answers to theological questions. It is great because you get a good comprehensive overview of many different areas of theology (Biblical, Systemantic, Historical, Dogmatic, and Modern) in one book! I am reading the entire book for a class. It does feel like I am reading 5 books! Even though it is a not meant to be comprehensive, I am still getting a lot out of reading it (especially in areas where I have not done much research).I like how the book starts with Biblical Theology and states that Biblical Theology should lay the foundation for Systematic theology. Too often, we develop our systematic theology first and then read that back into the Bible. This is backwards. We need to let God speak to us first in context, and then build on that foundation. The book is well footnoted and points you to other excellent resources for further study. The author is mildly Calvinist, dispensational, young earth and cessationist. You are never going to agree with an author on everything, especially in a book that touches on as many subjects as this one does. I am not Calvinist or cessationist, so I had some disagreements with him in places. The only negative for me is that he did not do a very good job in the systematic or Biblical theology sections discussing the Biblical evidence against his views and for the opposing views. That may be because of the nature of the book, but it still felt like the book could have been a bit more balanced. There are Calvinist statements like "regeneration happened in the Old Testament" that are not well supported. I wish it was that presented the alternative views better and did not argue so strongly for Calvinistic thought. The section in systematic theology on the Holy Spirit is not well done. Cessation is taught dogmatically. Cessation is not at all a Biblical doctrine, but it is man interpreting the scriptures in light of his own experience.Overall, this book is an excellent resource. I will refer to it again many times in the future. This book is worth having in your library.
