Best I have seen for the price!
I have used a lot of courses to study language, including Pimsleur and the Rosetta Stone. This is the best self teaching guide I have seen on the market for the price. It works great if you are super busy and can only afford small amounts of time to study. Even five minutes in this course will still take you somewhere and there is no set time for each lesson. You work at your own pace. If you want to jump in and study a whole bunch at once, you can do that too. The thing I like about it is that it explains the grammar piece by piece without dumping it all on you at once. It also does not give you words and phrases to memorize without giving enough grammar to know why it is the way it is. For those who are complaining about the stuff tucked away in the back of the book or about it leaving you hanging without explaining things, that is simply not true. The front of the book tells you how to use the course and it explains that there are portions in the back that give some very fundamental principles that you should study first. It also tells you where these are located. Also if you slow down and pay attention to what is written in the grammar sections and other parts of the lesson, every thing is clearly laid out. This is a super simple course and can be used by any one with any level of knowledge in their target language (including 0) just follow the instructions and don't forget to read about how to use the course. Also, it is best if you take the authors' advice and spend plenty of time on each part of each lesson writing it out and re-reading it, re-listening, etc. You can't expect to zip through any course on any topic produced by anyone and retain anything. Hence, it is study. There are a couple of typos, (nothing major) but it is a minor distraction and easily detected and easy to figure out what the word should be if you are paying attention. I know that is a bad thing when it comes to a language course (really bad actually) BUT, the few that are there will not hurt you... really. Another thing that this course does that many do not, is that it encourages you to take things further on your own as much as you can. It also helps you understand just how to do that. They don't just teach you to repeat a list of phrases like a robot, but they help you to know how to say what you want to say. It also teaches you to read, spell, speak, understand and how to keep learning. You will be able to browse the internet, read books and newspapers, blogs etc. In your target language. Write letters and emails or send texts in your target language. The sky is the limit and when you are done with the course you don't have to stop. You can keep reading and learning by doing things you normally do, just in your new language. In reality, you didn't learn all the words and phrases in your native tongue by studying the language, you read books, talked and listened and let your surroundings teach you. The only difference here is you will have to look for ways to surround yourself with this new language, but there are plenty of creative ideas out there that can help you do this. It's a matter of whether or not you really want to learn. Nobody is paying me to put this review on here and I am not affiliated with these people in any way. I'm just a happy customer. If you are not interested in fast ways to memorize phrases and not being able to express yourself and if you don't care how fun the course makes it (although you can make it fun if you want it to be) and you want something that will teach you... really truly teach you. I highly recommend this course. By the way I have found this course very enjoyable for one simple fact. You WILL learn. Language learning is not easy, but it is rewarding to those who work for it. $60 is more than worth the money. Been there, tried the others... I like this one.

Solid for the Price BUT...
Ok so this is a very nice and informative course for beginners, but if you are like me and your preferred method of learning a new language is actual conversation and not "this is my table" "this is my chair" then maybe try looking into a different approach. I feel like not many people learn the way I do because i've learned a lot of my russian by speaking and listening to my native friends and memorizing russian versions of songs as well as watching movies and tv shows in russian. I think this is the best course you can get for the price if you do like learning at a tourist level because this teaches you a lot of tourist things like "metro, coffee shop, ma'am and sir, airplane, airport, name of countries, etc." but since I want more conversational russian I'll continue to learn my way. To be honest if you're a book person then get this, but if you can do it online like me, Duolingo is an amazing tool and best of all free, what this book can provide is explanations as to why things are the way they are and some russian norms, however, if you use duolingo on a computer there is a comments section in which natives and people struggling alongside you provide feedback to each and every exercise and clarify doubts. Also my russian friends have found a couple of mistakes in the book already and they include a lot of phrases that native russians never us or find strange, but they agree that while its a bit formal for native standards its a pretty solid foundation to start on and if you are going to be doing business over there its a must. Without a doubt the best way to learn a language is immersion in its culture and practice with native speakers. If you dont have any native speakers around then this book comes with CD's to help with the pronounciation but its a robotic voice which doesnt come near to the accent of a native. Because of this I suggest signing on to MyLanguageExchange and finding a language buddy in Russia who you can skype with because the most crucial thing to a good accent is listening and being corrected by natives. With all these techniques ive mentioned combined ive become pretty conversational and have learned "survival" russian with what my friends consider "a perfect accent for a non native" in just 3 months. I hope my suggestions will be useful to you and удачи друзья.

Excellent
Living Language is a great method to start learning a language if you like the traditional grammar-translation method and audio repetition. It is unfortunate that Living Language's website is no longer available and the method has been phased out.
