Continuo Playing on the Lute, Archlute and Theorbo: A Comprehensive Guide for Performers (Music)

This is a pretty goofy review: My husband bought this book for a friend and is planning to pack it in his suitcase. Luckily, though the book is large, it is relatively light. I'm glad the book isn't very heavy!

Glad to see this book back in print, or at least in recent print. The edition I borrowed from the library years ago was hard to come by for less than $75 on the OP market. I found that it helped to have a a bit of music theory and experience with figured bass to make sense of it--none of which I had back then (except what I learned from the streets). Also gives a thorough run-down of all the different continuo lute types and the types of music they were likely to accompany. Nigel North is a great guy and a regular at LSA "Lute Camps".

I bought this book as an introduction to continuo on the lute. Unfortunately for me I am very much a novice player and most of the book is beyond my grasp. I do find some of the information helpful, and I hope that by continuing to play I will better understand the material in a few months, or years.

This is probably the best resource for learning continuo on the lute family. Be prepared for a lot of hard work, though. Continuo is not learned in a few weeks.

Like student of Continuo I find this book such a great help to start study on this subject. There are so many manuscripts and facsimiles avaible, but This method works like a good collection and synthesis of many ideas.The shipped and delivery works excellent too.

It's a very good book. I didin't read it all yet but so far I love it!It did arive in time and in perfect condition too!

I've been looking for a copy of this book for some time, but have found that I'd need to sell the house to be able to afford a second-hand copy.Imagine my delight when Books Etc offered this print-on-demand version for a very reasonable price.There's no Kindle version, and although I own and use a Kindle it's useless when it comes to things like printed music and detailed diagrams.Let's see a lot more of this kind of thing.Bill Samson

A great book on plucked instrument continuo playing. A very readable text, lots of illustrations and relevant musical examples all go to make an indispensable volume on the subject.

This is exactly what I wanted.After having studied the classical guitar I've been playing the lute now only for about two years.This book gave me a lot of know how and understanding for old music and continuo playing.I can recommend this book.
