Thomas Edison: Inspiration and Hard Work (Heroes of History)

Wonderful book for children
I bought this book, not the only one in the series written by these authors, for my autistic grandson. He is getting into history and I wanted to make sure he read these books. I also purchased a dvd with Andy Rhooney as the teen age Thomas Edison. So that, he could see what Tom was like growing up. This book is wonderful and filled with Tom's adventures. I would recommend this for all ages, including adults.

So Wordy
Please don't make your students read this book. I purchased it for a rising 8th grader that I tutor to read over the course of a week this summer. I read it before passing it over to him, and knew it would be a challenge due to the style of writing. It's not hard to understand, just excessively wordy. His daily assignment was to identify 3 things that should not have been included, and at the end of the week he wrote several paragraphs on how the book could be improved by not focusing on minor details.

Well written and enlightening
I learned just enough about Edison’s life to be both enlightened and entertained—without having to endure the insufferable sludge of detail that weighs down most biographies. This one was just right.

A good quick overview
I read this before visiting the Edison labs in New Jersey, a National Park. It gave a good overview and helped me better appreciate Edison's life and achievements. It's well written and a very quick read geared more to early teens than adults who would like an indepth coverage.

What a Man.
This man as a young boy was on a path to learn and discover. He put projects before him and nothing would stop him.He has invented or improved so many things that we use today: light, phonograph, x-ray, etc. He often neglected his family pushed himself for weeks and months because of his drive to find answers to items he was working on.

Although I am skeptical of non fiction that tends to come away as fiction-y it was a good introduction of the material
5th grader needs to complete a Thomas Edison paper and presentation. Although I am skeptical of non fiction that tends to come away as fiction-y it was a good introduction of the material. Child was absorbed by writing.
