I am not sure. My load was about 100 pounds

You crank it in both directions.

Q: What size pipe is required?

I used 3/4" EMT for both the crank guide and the roll-up sides. It's galvanized and inexpensive.

Q: Can you attach the EMT rod to the upper part of the green house arch above the roll up sidewall instead of pounding a rod into the ground?

Yes, Ive seen it done that way although I pounded mine into the ground. If your roll-up sides are conventional sized purlins, you'll need to get a slightly longer attachment rod from the hardware store. Not a big deal but worth mentioning so you're not surprised if that tiny rod isn't quite long enough
