Size:6 Pack Nutmeg is an aromatic spice used in both sweet and savory dishes. Whole seeds are cultivated from the nutmeg tree, which is native to several Indonesian islands. It’s warm and slightly sweet quality enhances the flavor of stews, potatoes, eggs, meats, custards, baked goods, eggnogs and mulled wines. To achieve optimal flavor potency, grate fresh with a nutmeg grinder or microplaner and use immediately. One whole nutmeg grated yields 2 to 3 teaspoons of ground nutmeg. Not the Cheapest, but Excellent Quality
I like it being in a glass jar that will fit on my spice rack. In the jar I received, there are 16 whole nutmegs, minus the shell, or mace, that enclosed them until they were harvested. The aroma is delightful. There is a "best by" date of March 2021 on the jar. I know from experience that it will take me at least 10 years to use all 16 of these and that since I will grind them as needed they will be just fine until they are all gone. I probably use them at a rate of less than 1 per year. Pay no mind to the "best by" date. Oh, and I am sooo glad I bought these just now as here in Georgia the peach season is under way. There's a recipe on the side of the jar for roasted peaches: 3 large ripe peaches, 1-2 Tbsp. butter, 6 tsp. brown sugar (that's 2 Tbsp.), Nutmeg. Slice peaches in half and remove the pit. Place in an oven-safe baking pan. Place a small piece of butter (about a tsp.) in the center of each peach. Sprinkle each half with one tsp. brown sugar and bake at 375F for 12-15 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with finely grated nutmeg. (1/8-1/4 tsp should be plenty.) I will let you know how this turns out.

My previous bottle lasted 5 years. Good to the last grate.
We don't use a ton of nutmeg, but when we do, we want it to taste and smell fantastic. So I bought a grater and a jar of Spice Hunger whole nutmegs. We use it for lots of baking in the fall and winter, and last year I made Alton Brown's aged eggnog. The nutmeg tasted fantastic in the eggnog...mixed in, and sprinkled on just before drinking. So I had about 1/2 of a pod left, and thought, "shoot, better get some more before the baking season really takes off." Popped on Amazon--forgetting when and where I bought my last bottle--and proceeded to look for the best deal. I found this listing, clicked on it, and saw this notification at the top:"You last purchased this in November, 2014."Wowza. Ok, five years old and still going (smelling) strong? I bought another jar, but still kept using my 1/2 pod leftover from 2014.When the new jar arrived, I grated some just to compare. Folks, it smelled and tasted exactly the same: perfectly fresh, fragrant, perfect, and just waiting to be added to the litany of pumpkin spice goodies that we love for just a few months at a time. (Along with eggnog...and how!)$7 seems like a lot to spend on a jar of spice, but the good stuff truly lasts.

Nutmeg, like coffee, should be purchased whole, not ground, for best flavor
In the 1600s, "the Dutch and the British were kind of shadowing each other all over the globe," explains Cornell historian Eric Tagliacozzo. They were competing for territory and control of the spice trade. In 1667, after years of battling, they sat down to hash out a treaty. "Both had something that the other wanted," explains Krondl. The British wanted to hold onto Manhattan, which they'd managed to gain control of a few years earlier. And the Dutch wanted the last nutmeg-producing island that the British controlled, as well as territory in South America that produced sugar. "So they [the Dutch] traded Manhattan, which wasn't so important in those days, to get nutmeg and sugar." And back then, the Dutch considered it a sweet deal! [Source: npr.org]

so many fragrant nuts
I couldn't find whole nutmeg in local groceries, so I checked Amazon. They have so many different brands and sizes, so I chose this one because of the ratings (only 2 at the time but they were 5 stars). I'm so glad I did; the bottle contained 15 of the fattest, most fragrant little nuts! You'll never buy store-bought ground nutmeg again.HOWEVER -- when I ordered them on Nov. 13, 2013, I paid 6.40 (and it was Amazon Prime) and now the price is almost 50.00! So if you're dead set on the organic variety, check back often for the price to come down, which it will. If buying non-organic is not a deal breaker, Spice Hunter sells the same product, but non-organic, 1.9 oz. for 6.61--The Spice Hunter Nutmeg, East/West Indies, Whole, 1.9-Ounce Jar. (Personally I don't care if it's non-organic and would probably have purchased the non-org variety, but it wasn't available at the time.) And don't bother with buying a nutmeg grater if you have a microplaner; they work the same. So, if you're new to buying whole nutmeg (as I was), and the large selections offered by Amazon is confusing (as it was to me) this would be the perfect choice.

Real Nurmeg Nuts, Not That Powdered Stuff
Hooray! Nutmeg nuts! I used the last of my nutmeg nuts and expected to buy a new jar at my gourmet market. But, alas . .disappointment!Driving around to different markets seemed a terrible waste of time -and the powdered stuff is just not NUTMEG! So, amazoncame through again. Thanks, amazon. You rock!

Mmm..the aroma!
This is my first whole nutmeg purchase and I won't be trying any others. They really grate up nicely with such a heavenly aroma. I grate this nutmeg over everything. Baked sweet potatoes, oatmeal, baking, macaroni and cheese, lattes. Mmmm! I will never go back to the dried pre-ground version! I thought the price was more than fair and I love that it is organic.

Fresh Nutmeg!
I love using fresh nutmeg! Having the Spice Hunter whole nutmeg in my pantry is wonderful. I used it in making pumpkin pie and the corn pudding for Christmas dinner! It does not come with a grinder, so make sure you have something to grate the nutmeg. It smells so good and just a little goes a long way, because it is fresh. You will definitely taste the difference as opposed to ground nutmeg in a can.

I didn't know what nutmeg really smelled like
Chef John is always saying use whole nutmeg, don't bother with the pre-ground stuff, so I bought some. Wow! I had no idea this is what nutmeg really smelled like, so rich and Christmas-y. In truth I have no experience with other brands of nutmeg but this smells and tastes wonderful.
