The science and engineering behind the Normandy invasion
This is one of the most fascinating titles in Haynes' series of manuals. Rather than describing the "when" and "where" of the Normandy invasion, this book delves into the "how" and does an excellent job. It describes the technical details of things such as the pre-invasion reconnaissance, the Mulberry harbors, Hobart's Funnies and the DD Shermans, and the forward airfields built shortly after the invasion itself. There is plenty of detail here without requiring an engineering degree to understand it. This should not replace any of your existing references on the D-Day invasion, but should be added to them.

A good interesting book on D-Day with unique perspective
An interesting way to approach a well written subject through an engineer's view.

The Tech Side of D-Day!
Mention of 6 June 1944 inevitably bring up images of troops wading ashore or paratroopers dropping from the skies. Yet a great variety of military equipment played vital roles in the initial assault and subsequent break-out. Jonathan Falconer's fascinating D-DAY OPERATIONS MANUAL provides an in-depth look at the SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING THAT MADE THE NORMANDY INVASION POSSIBLE.Falconer's book does not delve into M-1s, Thompsons, jeeps, etc. Rather he examines and describes such systems as the various landing craft employed, radio navigation aids, the Mulberry artificial harbors, assault gliders, specialized AFVs, airfield construction, etc. Having a bare-bones knowledge of D-Day, I found this material fascinating and quite informative. Likewise, the book is wonderfully-illustrated with b&w and color photgraphs, diagrams, maps and illustrations. To coin a phrase, reading D-DAY OPERATTIONS MANUAL, gives "The Rest of the Story." While the bravery of the Allied troops decided the matter, Falconer's book reveals the military technology that helped secure that victory. Recommended.

Tutto lo sbarco in Normandia
Molte notizie e informazioni conosciute ma anche molti piccoli dettagli sui mezzi e sull'organizzazione. Un libro interessante anche per i conoscitori

Great resource for the D Day fan
Lots of information about how and why the invasion was planned the way it was, like the landing sites in the English sector were selected because of the location of well drained lands located inland, which were perfect building sites for runways.

He was really pleased with the level of detail
Brought as a present, but I did get to look through it when the person it was for received it! He was really pleased with the level of detail, and the range of things covered. As it was a present I did not get to study it in too much detail, but it may actually end up in my Xmas stocking next year! A great book written in the same way as the Haynes Manuals loved by many. If in doubt get it. It is one of those books that would make a great coffee table conversation starter ...

If you have some knowledge of the events surrounding D-Day there is nothing new here.

D-Day well explained
It is one of the best books on D-Day operations I have purchased in that it explains with good diagrams and photographsplus more details on the more unusual subjects, such as the Horsa glider which has been most useful to complete a modelI am constructing for my museum as a tribute to soldiers that crash landed just outside Arnhem at Megen . One criticism is that it would have been nice to see more detailed drawings of the Hamilcar glider and explanation to the numbers in the photograph. The coverage of Mulberry is also very good. On the whole very good value for money
