i love this friggin thing
I was looking for a stove that was lightweight and back packable. They made this thing not only compactable, but also very durable. If your thinking about buying the solo stove, ...don't! Get this instead. I will say that I still went out and bought a snow peek gas stove to have since I do live in Washington where it rains all of the time, and this scout stove is mostly for dry conditions. If all you have around you is wet bio-mass (fuel, sticks), then your going to need an alternative to cooking stuff. I believe the weight of this scout stove is about 0.75 lbs. (just under a pound) so not terribly ultralight, but it does fit in my MSR stainless steel pot perfectly! The only other thing I might add to this review is that this scout burns HOT! your sticks and leaves will burn very fast, so you will need more fuel ready to keep feeding this thing and keep it going. I've used mine in my backyard to make hamburgers and also took it camping with me. That being said, I'm giving this thing 5 stars not because of its all around usefulness, but because of its durability to keep working every time. (I think I could hit this thing with a hammer, dent it, assemble it and still cook with it!)I think this costs 60 bucks! The solo stove costs 90 bucks! same principle just cheaper and more compact! BUY IT!

Good stove, but a little hard to piece back together and take apart after multiple uses due to warping.
Great stove, fun to use and burns hot for about 20 minutes. Once used a few times, it's hard to get back together as it comes in multiple stacking pieces which get warped a little. Once put back together, it's hard to take back apart. Overall, a great idea for minimalist camping.

Burner deformed after single use - thin wall warped.
The double inner ring wall that hold the drop down ash tray warped after just 1 use, no longer round in shape, deformed due to very thin wall sheet metal that was not designed to hold its shape under normal burning. Now the deformed inner container was no longer having concentric fit with the outer stove wall, i have to slowly twist it to get it fit in for storage.Disappointed that it is a poorly constructed stove which was not built to last, can you imagine how much more will it warp under repeated use, the stove will deform further. Construction quality was very poor, not worth the money. I hope to be able to get a refund.

upon unboxing the 2014 silverfire scout, I see the upper edge of the stove where the 2 layers of steel meet shows a gap, and there are scratches everywhere. Seems like they toss it over and over again in the factory. Overall, the stove is small and i like the design but the construction quality is not as good as expected for a 70 dollar product.

It is easy to light but I was just able to get a liter of water boiling at 8000 ft after loading it twice with wood. Perhaps the wood was too light and dry rotted or not packed tightly enough. It is light compact so great for back packing and I keep it inside the water pot in a plastic bag and stuff sack so I don't have to wash it until I get home.

Worth it
My stove showed up missing a piece at first. I emailed the company and within minutes I had a response. I called them to explain what I was missing and they send it out two day air. The night I got my part I put the stove to use. I had water boiling within 3 minutes once I had a fire going. Tonight I was even able to cook a steak in a cast iron pan in 15 minutes. Another thing I like is that once you let the fire die out its cool enough to touch within a few minutes. I would say 10 to 15 or by the time your done eating and ready to move again. Yes you can find stoves on Amazon that are similar and cheaper but TRUST me you get what you pay for.

Is the Scout a keeper?
I tested this product against several of my other bio fuel stoves. It most closely resembles the Solo Stove in size and capacity. Both stoves burned an average of 30 minutes on a full fuel charge of similar wood chips. Both burned to a clean white ash with little to no soot on the tested pot. Water boil times were also similar in the 6 minute range for a 1.5 litre pot.I'd say that the Scout manages larger diameter pots better with the more aggressive pot stands (serrated edges) but the Solo nests nicely in it's own pot and that's a plus for backpacking convenience. On several trips I have decided the solo is best for solo jaunts, while the Scout seems best suited when cooking for 2 or more people.
