Fun Movie
As others have said, this movie is unrealistic in many ways, like the basic premise of keeping a ton of dogs at an old hotel, with gadgets that help them eat, and play when no one is around, etc., and the kids somehow having the time and money to do all this. That said, it's not a complaint. Many of the folks saying it was unrealistic were bad reviews, but I don't hate movies for being unrealistic. Movies are movies, not real life, and if I was looking to deal with real life, I wouldn't need to watch movies. Maybe you'll feel better about it if you consider it fantasy, or even the comedy it was meant to be. I would like to point out two things. One, the younger brother was a "gadget inventor" of sorts, and he's the one who made the gadgets in this, using mostly a lot of junk. I never questioned where the money came from for all that. The kid who worked in the pet store said he could provide food at an employee discount. OK, it was still a lot of food.I'm an adult and I enjoyed this, and I imagine kids would think it was fun. It wasn't like my favorite movie but still fun. It has less dog stuff in it than expected and took too long to get started on the good stuff (like "when's the hotel coming?"), and yeah, a bit unrealistic, but it was still some good fun. And I was hoping all the mean rotten people in this movie would have their day coming. (I guess that was a bit predictable.)I do feel I need to address some garbage said in some of the bad reviews. I felt some people were a bit extremist animal vigilantes. I'm an animal lover. Furthermore, I don't just see them as fun cuddly things that are there for my benefit; I respect them. Some people are just looking to be offended over things. I recognized that the guys from the pound were total jerks and seemed to enjoy their job a bit too much, but am also aware that not every pound employee is like that. And some shelters are no-kill. And someone insisted pet stores don't "adopt" out pets, but sell them for profit. That is just wrong. Now, the kind of pet store in a mall that just sells animals, yeah, sure, and who knows where they came from. But this was a *pet supply* store, and yes they do adopt animals, generally from the local shelters. I've gotten several of my pets that way, so I know for a fact they do it. And of course no reputable breeder is selling their pups to the pet stores to sell! -- I don't think anyone thinks that's where those dogs came from. They are strays and I think that's obvious. I think some of you have just been barfing up these same old complaints for so long that you can't get past it. I think it's cool that these kids wanted to take care of the strays so they wouldn't end up in the pound. As to the foster parents, yeah, they're jerks. That was by intent, and it was intended for comedy. You remember, comedy? If your kids watching with you are getting the wrong impression, then perhaps you could explain the concept of "it's just a movie." I mean, in the end, who is supposed to be leaving good impressions on your kids, movies, or YOU? That goes for how it ended as well. This is supposed to be a feel good movie with a happy ending, and some of you are just ruining that. Sorry for the rant.

"Going to the Dogs" gets A New Meaning
"Hotel for Dogs" is an absolute winner for kids and adults who love dogs (me). Two children lose their parents and end up in dubious foster care with irresponsible adults. They secretly acquire a dog and to avoid a dog-catcher the dog finds safety inside a dilapidated former hotel, teaming up with the two other dog residents. The kids, and friends they meet, conspire to turn the hotel into a haven for stray dogs and this is where the movie takes an extraordinary and interesting twist. One of the children is an engineering genius. He devises all kinds of machines to make the dogs happy and lessen the children's workload. For example, food is automatically poured into bowls and delivered down a long dining room table to each dog. A fire hydrant appears when a pad is pushed and afterwards, the hydrant is automatically cleaned. The dogs experience riding in something that looks like the front seat of a car, with wind blowing at them and films of the outdoors shown on the screen, giving the illusion that they are speeding in the country. There are way too many clever things that the "kids" arrange for the dogs to describe here, Suffice it to say they are ingenious and absorbing in themselves. The dogs are filled with different personalities, and take star turns. If you are looking for upbeat family entertainment, this is a sure-fire hit.

Great movie for anyone who loves dogs! Highly approved by my sheltie, LuLu!
LuLu loves watching TV and especially enjoys shows and movies featuring dogs. Even the credits on this movie show all the participants with dogs (and one with a cat). It also shows the need for more good foster families for orphans in the United States. STM
