Indispensible
Any understanding of the Great War must begin, and end, with a map or two. Michael Neiberg has provided us with an atlas of several hundred plates covering all areas and aspects of the conflict. The “Background” section for example includes the Franco-Prussian War, the Balkan Wars and the Russo-Japanese War among many others. All the major campaigns of the Eastern and Western Fronts are included of course. There are several plates devoted to the Arab Revolt and the stipulations of the Sykes-Picot Plan, U-boat losses in the Atlantic, the British Blockade, African campaigns, and even a map showing the events of the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917 (which I’m personally satisfied to see he considers relevant).Cartography is decent and usually detailed enough to offer a good level of understanding and the narratives are concise. The volume is sturdily bound in 11” x 14” format and the content is indexed as well as it needs to be.This atlas is as close to comprehensive and indispensable as anything I’ve seen: an absolute ‘must-have’ for scholars, students or dilettantes.

It's like seeing the Great War under a microscope.
Visually, it's a treat. It's comprehensive with colorfull maps and details galore. This book plots the exact course of the air, sea and land campaigns of WW1, and traces the ebb and flow of every major battle in every country the war touched with supporting maps and details to identify the commanders of many offensive and defensive units and their troop strength as battles rage.Plus, it gives careful attention to details like convoy plans, stormtrooper tactics, U-boat losses, blockade effectiveness, idealistic treaties, Airship raids, airplane bombings, military casualties, and nearly everything else involved in the war that had a bearing on its outcome. This book is one not to miss.

A brilliant visual conception of the battles of WW1
A brilliant visual conception of the battles of WW1. Amazing detail with the actual battle formations and lines of attack detailed as if the conflict happened just yesterday. The written summary on each page is quite remarkable in that in a couple of sentences enough detail is afforded to make good sense of the strategies being employed. A must for anyone who wants to convert thousands of words into pictorial representation. Great value for money.

A must read!
OH my, I loved this book! It took me forever to read it, as I read every word of every page! This was worth the money for sure, as I have other WWI books, some by Churchill, but this one was a really good overview, and wonderful battle descriptions. Just enough on each subject that it made you able to pick up other books with the knowledge gleamed from this book.

Superb clarity.
This is the best atlas of WW1 I have seen. Superb clarity, easy to understand, right level of explanatory text for an atlas, not cluttered like some of the others. Good coverage. You won't need another atlas.
