Really helpful when writing until plans and including all of the activities that will meet the needs/abilities/skills of an ELL learner. It mentions the standards you will use/include (WIDA and Common Core), activities and lessons you can use, and resources (worksheets, graphs, charts, etc) and assessments used to assess if student learned what you wanted them to learn. It also emphasizes that it is important to think about how a student's background, language, and culture affect how the student learns.

Initially, I found this book on a friend's shelf and started paging through it. It's so thorough and well thought out! The DVD is fabulous. I've watched every clip and all of them are exemplary. For anyone who is doing or coaching balanced literacy, this is a must have.

I had to purchase this book as a requirement for a Masters level course, but I LOVE IT. The book is filled with resources and practical applications and suggestions for the classroom. I am going to keep this book and reference it when planning.

Great resource for me. Teachers are always wanting ideas and information about helping older students with comprehending . I like to stay up on my research and this book allowed me to do so.

The text's organization and DVD are exceptional. It scaffolds so that students, whether pre-service or in the profession are continually building their knowledge and skills.

This book is a fantastic resource for any teacher or person interested in teaching students to read. It covers all types of reading instruction from guided reading, read-alouds and everything else. There are dialogs for examples and even a DVD that shows students reading and other instructional videos. There are also resources listed throughout the book to help teachers develop their own classroom library. I recommend buying it for keeps, you will constantly refer back for ideas!

Every aspect of this book is incredibly practical, even for French Immersion.
