Compact, light and fast
I’ve had this for about a week and works seamlessly with my 2023 MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt 4 port. It’s fast and mounts quickly. A definite upgrade from my 5 year old Western Digital. Transferred +200GB directory in minutes.

Excellent drive.
I've always enjoyed using LACIE drives for back-ups. Well designed and protected. Seems a bit slower now that I invest more in SSD drives. But I only bought this for long term storage and it's a perfect fit for my workload. Yes, I would recommend for those in need of a durable portable storage unit.

Drive works great
Have had great success ( until I recently updated my Mac OS and was told by Apple that I'd originally formatted this drive incorrectly and my 2 years worth of work would now not work with the Mac OS update ?!?!?!?!??! ) Be sure if you're using Mac that you format the drive using APFS format so that video may quickly movie between the drive and Final Cut Pro ( contact Apple support to confirm this )

Update: Works OK after mysterious initial failure
REVISED 01/01/25: I purchased this to back up a half-full 6TB Seagate Backup Plus drive that's acting flaky, attached to my MacMini.UPDATE: The drive came formatted EX-FAT (Mac and Windows compatible) with a USB-C to USB3-Micro B "Super Speed" (two lobes, for the drive) cable. With no spare USB-C ports on my MacMini, I used a Samsung USB3-A to USB3-Micro B cable from an older Seagate drive into a Sabrent USB3-A hub on the MacMini. It worked fine at first, then failed as described below. Retrying with the LaCie cable into a USB-C to USB3-A adapter into the hub worked. Super sensitivity in the Mac system? I have no other explanation as the drive continues to work on Windows PCs with the old Samsung cable.INITIAL REPORT: It mounted fine out of the box, and macOS Disk Utility recognized it as a 5TB volume "LaCie." The first few copy batches of multi-GB files and folders worked OK, but then copying stopped, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 reported "Copy operation stopped, volume disappeared." (WTF??). macOS Disk Utility no longer sees the device. It mounted as a USB volume on Windows 11, and I could see the copied files. Windows reported disk problems so I ran the Scan & Repair utility (Properties->Tools), which took a while but reported a successful repair. Trying again on macOS, and the same result: The drive starts up (vibrates) as expected but doesn't mount and is still invisible to the Disk Utility app.

A Most Reliable External Drive
I first discovered the LaCie drives during a music video shoot in the middle of nowhere. The DP would dump his footage into the drive. Which in turn was dumped into a computer later. The DP chose the LaCie brand because he used it in rough climates and places without failure.Today, I chose this drive for the same reasons.3D creation produces massive amounts of data.I needed a drive that could hold all that data and take a beating if it were dropped.Backing up to the cloud is okay, provided I have an internet connection. But, using the cloud as a server came with problems.Reality CheckI needed an external drive that could hold more data than my computer. The drive would act as a server for the computer. The drive must be rugged. There would be times when it would be used in the field. The lack of funds left me looking at HDD models instead of SSDs.Nonetheless, this drive has not let me down. And because it is a 5TB drive, it can handle my data storage needs. What I likeCompatible with my Macbook ProPlug-and-play technologyRuggedNo overheating problemsPlenty of data storageI recommend this external drive for the budget conscience, graphic, or 3D editor.
