Awesome lens (if you get one that works)
Edited:Bought this same lens from camera store, dont trust the transport anymore. Worked flawlessly. Picture quality is amazing. Bokeh is very nice and easily achieved.Ring light is necessary if you want to shoot bugs or tiny things unless it's very bright.Still bit scared about the build quality. I've had other sony lenses and never had problems.DMF focus mode (in camera) helps if autofocus is too iffy. I feel that or manual focus is needed for bug shots. Autofocus will suffice for anything bigger or farther away.Original:Just received this sweet macro lens. Hook it ip to 7RM3.Camera display shows "flicker". F number shows --. There's no auto focus. Turning off auto stability. Testing with different focus limits. Nope. Nothing. Happens. Lens doesn't make a sound either. Switch to manual. Also defective. Doesn't focus at all.Oh bummer, like so many 1* reviews here, I've gotten a dud.It was shipped in a original box, looks unopened. Box wrapped in a plastic bag. No extra insulation, bubble wrap. Nothing. Not a conciving way of shipping expensive lenses.Returning as defective and trying another one. Was really hoping getting some bug shots.

As fantastic as advertised!
This lens is everything everyone says it is. Tack sharp, durable build, great features and terrific bokeh. The auto focus hunts a little more than I'd like, even with the limiter switches on. But overall, it's still better than my zooms. The push to lock auto-manual focus ring is an awesome feature though. I wish more modern lenses had this. It has a great DoF and, as I said, the bokeh is creamy smooth with beautiful, round bokeh balls. When using as a portrait lens, you can find no better - great sharpness, color rendering and DoF. When using as a macro, it's a little on the dark side. If working close, like with insects, you will definitely need supplemental light, even in full sunlight. The build quality is superb and the lens feels substantial in your hand - like an old metal Nikon lens.Overall, if you need a razor sharp macro and portrait lens, this is the lens you're looking for!

Great image quality!
When people say this lens is sharp, they aren't kidding. The first picture I took was a pine cone just to test it out - auto focus locked on (though it's not the fastest and hunts a little) and produced a beautiful image without any editing. This is a versatile option, great for close up shots, but I can see it working well for portraits too. Good build quality - feels substantial, and I did drop it once on hard dirt with no ill affect. (Note to self: Don't forget to zip up the back pack!!) I like how the auto focus can be switched on or off by pulling out/pushing in the lens - very convenient, except it doesn't work if you have the lens hood stored on the lens because this blocks access. For image quality I'd say this rivals or comes very close to my GM lenses, but for a lot less money. The items that come with are fairly cheap quality, but considering the price is the same as a stand alone lens, I'm ok with that.

No brainer for Macro work.
I don’t understand how people have purchased this lens twice and get a dud. You must be buying from 3rd party vendors faking used items for new items or something shady. I for what it’s worth always buy “ships and sold by Amazon”. I have bought this lens 3 times. Resold and rebought as my photography needs evolve. Never have I had a bad copy. This is one of Sony’s best built lenses. Hands down. It is sharp, and well built. Incredibly sharp optics. Flawless. Just get it.

You have a choice...this lens with autofocus or a manual lens...
If you're a seasoned photographer definitely buy a manual macro lens but if you're just starting out this is a great lens. A bit pricey but the photo quality is fantastic. It's a typical macro lens that you have to move forward and backward to get the subject in focus and it can be frustrating but the autofocus/manual focus ring is fantastic and very quick to switch off.I'm sure I will want to upgrade my camera lens down the road and get a faster manual focus macro lens but I also like the fact that this has 3 settings so you can use this as a regular lens. It's larger but not super heavy like my 70-200/f4 lens. It feels pretty balanced on my A6300. It's going to be a lot of trial and error but I'm pretty happy with the lens. Do I wish it was faster? Yes, but it would also be a lot more money

Great Lens for Portraits in addition to Macro Photography
When I decided to make the move to the 2nd generation full frame Sonys (7RII and 7SII) from my Canon 5D Mk III, I made a post at dpreview forum stating that I had the better (399 dollar) Metabones adapter and would be using my Canon lenses. I wanted to get a few First Party Sony FE (Full Frame) Native lenses that people there felt were the best of the bunch. Despite the standard responses from mean people, there were some very helpful people who said to check out this lens (Sony FE 90mm) as well as the Sony 55mm F1.8 FE Prime. This was excellent advice and I'll totally ecstatic with both lenses. Thanks to the advice of the "nice people" in their Sony Lens forums I bought two of their sharpest lenses that don't have the autofocus hunting problems or lack of sharpness that some of the others are reported to have.I own Canon Macro lenses in a similar mm and was very happy with the Macro functions as well as the fact it makes an excellent portrait lens. (Good for a slight compression effect on faces that even very thin people enjoy, they just make everyone appear better).I'm very happy with both and would recommend them to anyone who's budget includes them.
