Don't know what yelp tone is. But the siren is just a siren. Nothing extra. The music button sucks. But its worth the money and works well.

How far do you have to put your mouth to the speaker?

You need to have your mouth relatively close. Depending on how loud your voice is, you may need be further or closer away. If you're too close/loud, your voice will be distorted. The siren is VERY loud and quite alarming. The music is LOUD, I'm not sure when I'd ever find that feature useful. Be careful when you use it that it's on the right setting. And don't leave it on the floor. My dog accidentally bumped into the megaphone when it was set to "siren" and the dog (and our whole family) practically hit the ceiling we were all so startled!
