Absolutely one of the best books on Human Factors
The book is packed full of knowledge and skilled insight by the author. It is not the kind of book I would read on a beach. After chapter two, I picked up a highlighter. By Chapter four I had a dedicated notebook, pen, highlighter and a book mark I could write on. Good for Human Factors teacher or new FO. A book best suited for the career pilot in a multi-crew system or anyone wanting a deeper knowledge of the environment, work and mind of the modern airline pilot. The book does read at first like (and could be used as) a syllabus; rather dry. But it gets a head of steam as it progresses. I have found invaluable advice and condensed many of its insights into my CRM/TEM briefings.

Finally a Neuroscience Perspective!!
An absolute gem for any pilot, flight instructor, ground instructor, CRM / SMS departments. Capt. Moriarty gives an incredible variety of the most important, most valuable, and most practical facets of Human Factors. This book provides countless real world examples, while most importantly, highlighting a huge link that has been missing in the vast majority of current Human Factors - Neurobiology. The scientific explanation of the "How's and Why's" makes this book stand out from the rest.

Great! A surprisingly readable, well-researched book about the human mind in the workplace
Although I'm not a pilot, I'm interested in how human factors apply in business and general situations. By trade I'm a software developer and have read this book cover-to-cover (I didn't anticipate that I would make it through but it is really rather gripping) I was both surprised and delighted to find that almost all aspects of the science discussed apply to much more than just the airline industry. I'd say most importantly that this book does not deal in wishy-washy psychology, but deals with scientifically discussed and well-researched aspects of the human mind. The author has a very unusual advantage over many writers being both an airline pilot and a former doctor (and for the more advanced reader, there are plenty of references that can take you into much deeper realms of the studies behind many of the conclusions). For me, the chapters that discussed how the brain works with systems 1 & 2 and the areas that talked about verbal communication and the adult/child cross-over were truly enlightening and can be seen even on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you read chapter 2 before you try skipping about though. Many of the case-studies have occurred in my life-time and try to tackle the reasons behind some of these tragic events. I'd strongly suggest against reading this book whilst on a transatlantic flight. Genuinely a great read!

An up-to-date, pragmatic and excellent addition to anyone's human factors library.
I found this to be a fascinating, excellent and timely addition to the existing literature on human factors. The style of writing is clear and concise without compromising on detail or evidence-based analysis. There is a wealth of up-to-date information in this book, and the author has taken a systems approach to explaining how complex topics such as communication, error management, information processing, stress management and personality all interact dynamically on the flight deck. Chapters are complemented with key summaries, detailed references, and, most helpfully, recommended further reading.

This easy to read book gives a broad understanding of key concepts in human factors from a different point of view. The author is very honest from page one and states he is not rediscovering the wheel just expressing another point of view. I recommend this book to any person interested in human factors and especially to pilots and CRMIs who think they have seen or read everything related to this subject.
