‘A means of helping you learn QuickBooks’
Author Michael Kane provides a much-needed adjunct to the owners of small businesses – a fine introduction to the incorporation of the QuickBooks software. As he explains, ‘Prior to the 1980s, most bookkeeping was done by hand, using ledgers, notebooks and other manual concepts. With the invention of a more affordable computer, word processor concepts where you could create spreadsheets became the norm. One company decided to go further and create a program that would handle bookkeeping tasks and be useful to accountants. The company, Intuit, is behind QuickBooks. QuickBooks can be added when you start a business, to an existing business, or when you decide to switch from a different accounting and bookkeeping software. You might have used Quicken, Money, or something else that exists, so learning how to use QuickBooks and who it is meant for is going to help you decide if you want to use the program.’And with that bit of background for those of us who are not familiar with QuickBooks, Michael offers excellent and easy to follow instructions on how the software works, how to use it and for what tasks it is meant to address, along with practical tips for adjusting to the use of this software. The history of accounting adds a fine sense of timeliness, bringing us up to date with accounting in general, and the evolution of QuickBooks from its founding in 1983 to the more user-friendly 1992 version.Adding color photographs to the presentation somehow makes learning the software more immediately accessible. Tips on implementing the software to improve management of budgets, payroll, sales tax, financial reports, fixed assets and vehicle information, and other tasks are explained well. Michael Kane makes the ‘busy-ness’ of business more efficient with this excellent introduction to QuickBooks. Grady Harp, September 19

BETTER THAN NOTHING
This book gives a general overview of QuickBooks but it is not enough to really understand the program and start using it. QuickBooks is complicated, counterintuitive, and different from regular double-entry accounting using ledger accounts. The program apparently tries to simplify accounting with various shortcuts but these shortcuts make everything more complicated as they use a different logic from regular accounting. I was hoping to find a book that was not so complicated that it would take forever to decipher but that would give a general overview of how QuickBooks works. This book did not accomplish that.
